I am certified in reading, writing, spelling, literature, and proofreading. For the past four and one-half years I have been employed as a religious education director at a local church, with children ages infant to high school. Previous to this, I raised two children of my own, and I also worked as a volunteer in the schools and for Buncombe County libraries in their preschool reading program. I have also taken several classes at UNCA in elementary education.
I love to work with elementary-aged children in particular as they develop their early reading and writing skills. Books, reading, and the wealth of available children's literature are one of my passions and I love to impart that to children. I also do a lot of writing and editing in other job-related activities, so I can help with that as well. I look at each child as an individual and will work with your child to develop their strengths and ways of learning. I am comfortable working with children from all different backgrounds and interests. My hours are very flexible. I am certified in reading, writing, spelling, literature, and proofreading. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
My experience with literature relates closely to my passion for reading. I am very familiar with children's classic books and am always on the lookout for new books. For older youth, there is a myriad of options out there for students to read and discover. I would help your child learn to see books and good literature (both current and classic) as a lifelong passion. I can also read along with a student to help in comprehension of some of the more difficult books that might be required in their studies.
In my work as a writer on many different topics, I must be able to proofread my material and also understand proofreading marks from those editing my work. While computer editing and spell check are great to a point, it is always important before submitting a finsihed piece of writing to read it through with an eye to spelling and grammatical errors. I find that it is especially helpful to have someone else read work created since more errors can be caught that way. I have a great deal of experience in proofreading my and other's work, and can assist your child in learning to read with a critical eye.
Reading is a personal hobby of mine and I approach it with a passion. I love to read to children and help them to discover the wonder of books. Typically, I will have a child choose some books from subjects that interest them, and will also have a great selection of my own books they can choose from. We can also go to a library with parent approval to pick out books. I work with children to help them understand the story sequencing and also help them to learn to read phonetically. Sometimes I will add an activity related to the story we just read.
My work involves a great deal of writing so I have to be a good speller to get my ideas across. Helping a student learn to read phonetically also helps with spelling in most cases. English is a tricky language, and some words just have to be memorized. In working with young children, I will make spelling fun, helping them to use new words learned in sentences. I can also create fun games such as spelling bees or other activities such as rhyming words to help them remember what they have learned.
In my work, I often research and write reports and marketing information. Sometimes I have to meet a deadline quickly, so I am used to thinking clearly, outlining my thoughts, and getting words on paper. In helping students with their writing skills, I will work with them in subjects that are of interest and can help them conduct research about a topic. After the information is gathered, I can help with putting together an outline of what needs to be conveyed and then will carefully read through a rough draft. After editing, I will help the student rework the rough draft into a finished piece. Depending upon the student's age, I will let them do their best to work independently with my assistance as support when they are uncertain as to how to proceed. I am good at drawing ideas out so that the student can fully express him or herself.
