About Trip

I bring an unusually diverse teaching history and skill set to my lessons.

As far back as the late 80s I was teaching and tutoring while getting my degree at the University of Colorado.

In the 90s I taught English, Math and Technical Drawing while in the Peace Corps in Lesotho. In the mid-90s I taught ESL in Prague for a few years.

When I moved back to the US in the late 90s, it wasn't long before I picked up teaching again; first I taught Design and Graphics Apps. at The Connecticut Institute of Arts (CT) and then later I taught Yoga at a Westchester (NY) studio, then philosophy classes (Buddhism) at Westchester Community College (NY).

I started using Photoshop v.3.0 in 1993, and have attended Photoshop World in Boston and Orlando. Photoshop was one of the disciplines that I taught at the Connecticut Institute of Art and, I have done demonstrations at the meetings of the Digital Photographer's Club in Asheville. It would not be an exaggeration to say that I have 10,000 hours of experience working in Photoshop.

Please contact me if you would like to view my portfolio for samples of my work.

I try to bring a respectable mix of experience and diversity to my lessons and my life.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Adobe Flash

I have been using Flash for a decade. I have integrated Flash into HTML-based websites (mandala-studio.com,) have build entirely Flash websites (triphuxley.com) and have created presentations which were not designed to use the internet as their platform, but were more like presentation animations.

I have a full command of all of Flash's tools, as well as all of the basic functions therein; working with symbols, movie clips, buttons, actions, time lines, tweens, integration of sound and video as well as frame rate, integration of images, and exporting (.swf) techniques. Also, having decades of teaching experience helps me to structure lessons which help students to help themselves after I've gone.

I have a working knowledge of ActionScript but don not have a level of expertize that would permit to design an interactive game using this technology. I have used ActionScript to do things like starting and stopping movies and music, jumping to different parts of a site or to various movie clips and allowing users to link to other sites.

Adobe Photoshop

Photography

My fascination with photography started early.

I hung my first show (shot in Med. format) when I was 14. By the time I was in high school, I had 500 hours of darkroom experience and had shot, processed and printed 75% of my school yearbook on my own.

At 19 years of age, I entered my first public photographic competition and won the grand prize and 2 runners up.

Then, in the early 1990s, I traveled abroad for 6 years. I carried an SLR and 3 lenses with me across every continent (except Antarctica and South America). When I returned to the U.S., I used some of the slides as the light source for a series of nudes which I showed at the Washington Square Art Festival in NYC.

While working in advertising and promotions in New York City, I did product shots in studio in medium format for my clients.

I began working in Photoshop in 1994 and have since logged over 10,000 hours. I taught Photoshop at the Connecticut Institute of Art for years and have attended Photoshop World in Boston and Orlando.

Since moving to Asheville in 2003, I have shot everything from dancers and politicians to architecture and industrial craft (jewelry, functional sculpture, asphalt, concrete counter tops, marble and granite kitchens, etc.) I even shot events and weddings.

I guess you would call me a Swiss Army Photographer.

Web Design

I began studying HTML in 1999. In 2001 I began working in Flash as well.

In 2005 I began using JavaScript and CSS in my designs.

At websitesofasheville.com is a gallery of many but not all of my sites. Unlike most web professionals, I offer soup-to-nuts webs services to my clients; I work with them to develop the identity of the site. I then do all of the design and development. I often do photography, writing and SEO as well.
