About Jacquie

I am a freelance tutor, translator, and editor with over 10 years experience in education. I grew up in Portland, Maine, where I attended a large public high school. I earned awards for my performance in math and science, French, and journalism, and I gained acceptance to all of the 12 competitive universities to which I applied.

I attended Dartmouth College in New Hampshire where I earned my bachelor of arts in French literature and Chemistry. While at Dartmouth, I worked as a tutor for science, psychology, history, literature and French courses. I was also a teaching assistant for introductory French language courses and worked in a biochemistry lab. After college, I taught English as a Second Language courses in the French university system in Lyon, France. I moved back to the States in 2009 and earned my master's degree in French literature at Duke University. I taught all levels of French, from introductory to advanced grammar and writing and literature seminars, over the past five years at Duke.

My primary passion as a tutor is French. I have experience living in Quebec, Paris, Lyon, and Brittany, and I am comfortable tutoring all levels of French, from beginning conversation to intensive translation. However, I also have experience with science tutoring, ESL, and helping build writing and editing skills. I have tutored a diverse array of students, from B+-level students trying to achieve an A, to students struggling to pass their language requirement, from grade school children to adult professionals. I would also be well-suited to tutoring for specific test preparation, specifically for the SAT, GRE, or AP/IB exams in French, History, English, or Biology/Chemistry. I have experience with preparing graduate students to pass their language reading exams in English, French, and Italian.

As far as my science qualifications, in high school I earned the U.S. Navy Math and Science award. I have a minor in Chemistry from Dartmouth College and have completed significant hours of coursework in biology, biostatistics, and physics. I also spent two years working as a research and development intern at a biotechnology firm.

My ESL experience is primarily that after college, I pursued a job teaching English as Second/Foreign Language to French students at the Ecole Normale Superieure in Lyon, France. I taught conversation, grammar, writing, and literature to intermediate and advanced-level students.

I have my bachelor's and master's degree in French literature and 7 years experience teaching and tutoring French at the college level.

I took the GRE only once to earn admission to all of my desired graduate programs. I have helped students in the past to improve their scores, particularly on the Verbal section of the GRE.

Please contact me with any questions and know that I look forward to working with you and helping you to achieve your personal and professional goals!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
