My expertise in Spanish and Spanish culture includes 10 years of formal study that began in middle school, continued through high school (passed that AP Spanish Exam) and included formal study abroad immersion in Barcelona, Spain for a full year while at UCLA. After returning from Spain, I tutored several high school students and also translated for a clinical Psychologist while still in college. More recently, I have provided some support for my son's Spanish-speaking soccer coaches and many clients I see at a food pantry where I am a weekly volunteer.
Both of my children studied Spanish in high school and I enjoyed supporting their progress at every level. Since moving to Apex in 2004, nine years as an occasional substitute teacher have provided me with patience and flexibility at every grade level. Every student has different strengths and weaknesses and we always find a way to work together.
As a WCPSS parent, I do feel the semester block schedule presents learning challenges for some world language students due to the accelerated pace of the curriculum. For students not taking world language courses "back to back" this presents even greater challenges. Extra instructional support through effective tutoring can supplement classroom efforts by building confidence through additional review and practice.
Let's do this together!

Karen did a great job of assessing where our son was at in comparison to where he should be. She offered several suggestions and approaches that are very practical and should be extremely helpful. Looking forward to our next session!
Karen met with my son and after the initial visit he said he already understood so much more than he did before his tutoring session with Karen. She was easy to talk to and clicked with my son right away. I can't wait to see his accomplishments in Spanish. He already has more confidence in the class.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
