My educational background includes study at Houghton College, Houghton, New York, where I received a BA in Elementary Education/Spanish K-9. I have also taken Special Education and Middle Grades graduate classes. I plan to work on my Masters in Education, probably in Special Education, starting this year.

My experience in teaching spans a wide area. I have taught elementary grades in New Jersey and Chicago. Then we moved overseas and I taught English supplemental classes to English-speaking children who attended a Dutch school. And, I also homeschooled my own five children. While overseas, I founded and directed a small English educational resource center to help expatriate families with educational needs. There, I worked with students from a variety of nationalities: Swiss, Swedish, British, South African, Slovak, Dutch and others. We also had a number of special education situations, so I am very familiar with individualizing educational plans for particular student needs. I have taught students from kindergarten through high school. Now back in the States for two and a half years, I have substitute taught for two school districts in Western New York, especially the elementary age (but I also worked with junior and senior high) and the special education department. Most recently transferred to Cary for my husband's job, I am working with children of a variety of ages in their homes, providing educational support where needed.

One of my stronger points is being able to "see" where the student is and to pinpoint his/her difficulty. Then I am able to plan a strategy to address that specific area. I particularly enjoy working one-on-one and with small groups. I help them learn how to learn, and hopefully, help them see how they ARE able to progress and have success on their own. I love learning, and like to share that love with students. I believe that learning should be an enjoyable and desirable experience and I seek to build life-long learners. In personality, I am patient with learners and like to provide ample examples for students so that they can see associations and make connections. When at all possible, I like to build from what students already know (a positive, affirming starting point)and move ahead into the area(s) of difficulty step by step, bridging the gap between the known and familiar to the unknown and more difficult or frustrating. I use a lot of encouragement with students, so they will think and learn without shutting down due to frustration with the work. I love to see students working toward their potential, which is usually greater than is realized.

I love children and teaching, and this is why I'm still doing it after so many years. It is such a rewarding investment.

My bachelor training is specifically in the area of elementary education so I have had many hours of both training and experience with elementary students. In addition, I have taught in a variety of these grades over the years--both primary and upper elementary. If I have not specifically had a position in one of these grades, I have certainly substitute taught in them. In addition, I home-schooled my own five children for most of their years overseas, all of whom have either graduated from college or are presently attending. Interestingly, two of them are in the education field and three are headed or already working in the medical field. They all continue to have a love for learning and are avid readers.

Great Tutor and a good confidence builder!

Our daughter loved when Ms. Roberta came! She always had fun learning games and was great at helping to build our students confidence. That confidence definitely carried over into the classroom! Ms. Roberta provided plenty of skill building activities that reinforced what she was learning in school.

We love Roberta, especially mom!

My 1st grade twins use to lack confidence in their abilities and really struggle with their schoolwork with lots of tears and frustration. But since Roberta has started with them, the tears and frustration are gone! They actually look forward to her coming over. Roberta makes the learning fun for them and is very patient and warm. She determined where my twins need the help and always comes with a plan in mind each session. She is constantly reviewing and reinforcing the information without them even knowing it. She has great suggestions and feedback for my questions as well. I highly recommend Roberta!

Has made such a difference!

Roberta's tutoring of our twins has been such a blessing to our family. Not only do they benefit but we all benefit from a quieter, calmer environment in our home. She can accomplish in an hour what it would probably take 2-3 hours for me to accomplish with them...without tears! Highly recommend!
