Shadyside Hospital School of Nursing (Nursing)
I have worked as a registered nurse for over 30 years in hospitals, clinics, senior care and CNA programs. I was trained as a Diploma nurse in Pittsburgh and I have always had an interest in teaching others. I have worked in staff development for many years and most enjoyed the 1-1 teaching opportunities and mentoring I was able to do as a nurse. My goal is to continue to teach and mentor students who want to become a nurse or work in any area of healthcare.
I use adult learning principles and interactive teaching when possible. I like to first explore how the student learns best, and develop a plan based on their learning style. Then I get a clear understanding of what they know and in what areas they need help, and concentrate only on what they need. I like to help the student realize what they capable of learning and doing. I believe in having fun while learning, and that you can be serious about teaching without being "serious". I welcome feedback as an instructor and make adjustments as needed to meet the needs of the student. I also give feedback often and expect the best from the student.
I have a working knowledge of most nursing topics, pharmacology, anatomy and physiology. I am able to help with test-taking skills and advise on passing the NCLEX. I may not know everything or have all of the answers, but I can help any student use resources and find the answers and be a problem solver. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I took the NCLEX exam many years ago when it was a 2 day sitting written exam and passed with a very high score. I am very familiar with the current computerized exam from speaking with new nurses who recently passed. I have worked with foreign nurses helping them prepare to take the exam. I am knowledgeable about basic test taking skills.
I have been a full time RN for 34 years and have kept up to date with current medications. My most recent job was coaching patients about 3 important topics, the first being medication adherence and managing side effects. I like to use a common sense approach to remembering meds, their use and common side effects.
I have many years of experience speaking in front of groups of all sizes, from a small classroom setting to large professional groups at state and national conferences. I prepare and produce all of my written and audiovisual materials using Word and Power Point, including animation in presentations. I have lectured to groups of staff development professionals on adult learning and how to use humor in presentations.
