I am currently a second grade teacher at Carthage Elementary School. In my classroom, I believe in building a strong community of learners in which students and the teacher respect one another. My classroom is bully free and students learn quickly that unkind remarks to one another are not tolerated in and out of the classroom. In reading, I teach guided reading groups. I pull four to five students aside for 30 minutes everyday while the other students engage in daily five centers where students read to themselves, read to someone, listen to reading, complete word work, or write. In writing, I used the six plus one traits of writing. I teach a different trait each month, such as adding details and ideas to writing or learning to organize students' writing by the beginning, middle, and end. In math, I instruct using a variety of manipulatives, daily calendar, number of the day, and daily word problems. Students continue to build their skills on a daily basis.
I attended college at Grand Valley State University in Grand Rapids, Michigan and graduated with a bachelor of art in elementary education. While attending college, I tutored many students including a sixth and seventh grader in every subject for two years. I taught grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure. I also tutored the students in pre-algebra and other math problems. There was a significant GPA improvement during the two years I tutored. I have also tutored three fourth graders for a year, organizing two to three lesson plans weekly. I listened to students' read daily to assess their progress. I also used graphic organizers to improve reading comprehension strategies.
I assistant taught in a first/second grade split in which I mainly taught Reading,Writing, and Math. In this classroom, I assessed students' on letter naming, phonemic awareness, and rhyming schemes. I conferenced with children weekly to monitor progress in reading skills. I used the Scott Foreman's reading basal to instill sustained silent reading and build stamina. I implemented zoo-phonics to teach vowel and consonant sounds. I also engaged the students in daily calendar math.
I did my student teaching in a third grade classroom teaching all subjects including Writing, Reading, Math, science, and social studies. For writing I taught using the six plus one traits of writing focusing on a different trait each month. In reading I taught students different reading strategies, such as making connections, inferring, predicting, and visualization. I used Everyday Mathematics to teach students about geometry, multiplication, and division. I taught economics using hands-on and a student based project. I instructed on motion with the Battle Creek Science Program using inquiry-based learning.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am a certified elementary teacher in Michigan and North Carolina.
