George Fox Univeristy (Int'l Studies, TESOL)
Though I studied TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) while earning my Undergraduate degree at George Fox University, I did not truly discover how I could use my creative and language talents until the 10 months I taught Conversational English and Business Letter Writing to college students at Hubei Polytechnic Institute in Hubei Province China. However, while I enjoyed being able to watch my students grow, the large classroom setting made it difficult to cater to all students learning styles. This is why I am eager to tutor and focus on individual need and learning styles.
I specialize in English reading comprehension, grammar and writing, though I can also aid in basic math and sciences, as well as social science and history.
I have had significant experience teaching low-English speaking students. I taught a job training English language course to adult students in Denver, CO and worked with low-to-intermediate English students in China. I have also had volunteer experience tutoring at the elementary level while I was a student in Oregon.
I am personable and can work with all ages. I am a strong advocate of finding an individual's learning style and finding creative ways to aid learning.
I look forward to connecting with students. I am available to meet students in the Helena and Missoula areas. I am currently available from 9am-6pm, but times can be negotiated depending on need. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
While studying International Studies at George Fox University in Newberg, OR, I gained an additional minor degree in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). I have used this degree to teach for 10 months in Xiaogan, China at Hubei Polytechnic Institute where I facilitated courses in conversational English, business letter writing, and business English. Additionally, I taught a month-long job training course in Denver, Colorado through the Denver Rescue Mission.
