About Erin

Hello!

My name is Erin and I am a student at the University of Montana. I am currently getting my degree in Anthropology and Global Public Health. I love school and teaching. My goal is to one day become a professor.

In my spare time I love staying active by hiking, running, or playing rugby! I am also an avid reader and am always looking for new book recommendations!

As far as my tutoring style, I think it is really important to take the time going over the basics of a concept before moving forward.

Unfortunately, its easy for key points to be lost in translation. My goal is to leave every student with a strong foundation of the subject, making moving forward an easier transition! I have been babysitting for over five years, and have cataloged countless hours of homework help! When a student is really close to understanding a concept, I have found that having the student try to teach you the subject is the best way for them to learn it themselves. I ask them pointed questions, and see how well they can explain it, and of course jump in when needed!

I spent the summer as a science camp counselor where I was placed in a classroom and spent the day doing experiments and sharing my love for science with a group of kids! Needless to say, it was a blast! That experience really made me realize my love for teaching, watching the kids eyes light up as we learned about the colors of the rainbow, rockets, or inventions made me love coming back each day. Science is fun because it can have so many real life applications. That is why I love getting kids interested in it! You can compare your body to a machine, or extract real live DNA from a strawberry. I would love to suggest fun at home experiments for students to have more opportunities for hands on learning, which is proven to be the most effective!

I am studying anthropology, and my particular interests lie in biological, forensic, and molecular anthropology. I initially had a double major in Biology but as I progressed in my undergraduate career, I decided that I was more focused and passionate about the anthropology route! I am currently looking into masters programs in biological anthropology where I eventually hope to work on ancient DNA!
Even though I am not an English major, I deeply thought about it before entering college. As I mentioned, I am an avid reader. One of the hardest parts of college for me is not being able to have time for as much pleasure reading as I would like! I would love to help students work on their reading skills, and be able to write thoughtful papers. Being able to write a good paper is such an important skill no matter what degree you choose, and I think starting kids out right is the best first step! I can help with any part of the paper process, from formulating an idea to using appropriate citations!

I would love to meet you and your student to talk about individual needs. I know that school can be challenging, and I hope I can make it a little easier!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anthropology

My bachelor's degree is in anthropology. I have had extensive experience in all four fields of the discipline. Due to my proficiency in the subject I was able to graduate in three years opposed to the usual four. I also have field experience in anthropology and archeology. In the spring of 2014 I spent six weeks in a public hospital in Sri Lanka looking at general medical care practices. In the summer of 2015 I spent two months in Ghana looking at maternal healthcare in a district hospital. This past winter I worked on a Mayan archeological site in San Ignacio, Belize.
