I received my bachelor's degree in Biology from the University of Minnesota. I was a laboratory research assistant in a veterinary biosciences lab for 5 years while attending as well as after graduation. I then attended Augsburg College for a 2 year teacher certification graduate program. I was hired immediately upon completion of my teaching license as a science teacher at a charter school outside Minneapolis, MN. For 4 years, I taught biology, chemistry and physics as well as a variety of elective courses (marine biology, environmental science, outdoor adventures, yoga) to 9-12 graders. I left my teaching position to move to Montana and pursue a masters degree in conservation biology.
When I'm not in school, I work for Missoula County as an education assistant and youth crew leader in the natural resource department. I love being outside, whether I'm working, backpacking, trail running or rock climbing. In my free time, I enjoy reading and cross-stitching gifts for friends and family.
Not only do I have an extensive background in the sciences, I have a lot of experience teaching science. Because I worked at a charter school, we had a maximum student population of 100 students, which allowed a lot of one on one time; I know how to pinpoint areas of weakness and turn them into strengths. I have always enjoyed helping individual students succeed with science and often go out of my way to make the material applicable or interesting.
Please let me know if you're interested in having me as a tutor! I am more than willing to work around my school schedule as well as yours. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
