About Ellen

I am a graduate student in microbiology at The University of Montana, but also have a degrees in veterinary medicine and art. My scientific specialty is microbial ecology, but I have taught courses in basic micro, as well as more advanced courses. I also have a veterinary degree and have taught physiology. I have also taught basic biology and because of my studies would love to tutor in ecology as well. I have taught laboratory courses and can help with writing laboratory notebooks and reports.

I have experience with comparative anatomy because of my veterinary degree, as well as practical experience. I have taught courses that range from basic biology to involved microbiology and physiology courses.

My field of study requires me to use mathematics and statistics on a regular basis. I enjoy mathematics and am willing to tutor in that subject as well as the sciences.

I have an art degree (MFA) and started by thinking I couldn't draw or do photography. I think that this gives me a special empathy for others who try at a subject while feeling that they are not very good at it. I still love doing art and would greatly enjoy teaching drawing or photography as private lessons.

I not only like to tutor for coursework, but am interested in tutoring people who need to give presentations (posters, as well as talks). So if you have a special project for which you need help, I would enjoy helping you to do your best.

I really love seeing a student understand and get excited about learning something new.

Please contact me for help with coursework or any special projects for which you might need help.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I am a science major who uses mathematics and statistics in my daily work. I have had some experience tutoring in elementary math and Algebra locally and really enjoy helping students to master this subject. Math does take practice (just like music or sports) so I try to come up with interesting ways to help my students practice basics.

Biology

I have a BS in biology as well as a PhD in microbiology. I have had extensive experience teaching both laboratory and lecture courses, but my true love is tutoring where I can work with a student one on one. In addition to tutoring to help with tests as well as in class assignments, I can also help with scientific writing and also scientific presentations. I enjoy helping students to perfect an writing assignment or presentation while making sure that they are expressing their thoughts.

Drawing

I took drawing and other fine art courses at Columbia College in Chicago. I received my MFA from Washington State University, where I taught beginning drawing.

Elementary Math

I am a science major who uses mathematics and statistics in my daily work. I have had some experience tutoring in elementary math and Algebra locally and really enjoy helping students to master this subject. Math does take practice (just like music or sports) so I try to come up with interesting ways to help my students practice basics.

Microbiology

I have my PhD in microbiology, have taught extensively in the field (lecturing, tutoring and lab courses). I have also given presentations and am knowledgeable about both lecture and laboratory requirements. I really enjoy tutoring and have tutored both locally and online. I enjoy helping students to understand basics and try to place information in context so that students understand the large picture as well as the details of an assignment.

Nursing

For those nursing students requiring help in the general sciences as well as laboratory assignments, my background in medical research (microbiology and veterinary medical science) gives me a good grasp of the basic sciences required in nursing. While my specialty is microbiology, I also have a good grounding in biology, physiology, writing research papers, writing lab reports, and writing SOAPs. I enjoy helping students one on one and am willing to explain things in different ways if the first explanation doesn't make sense. Because I practiced veterinary medicine, I am competent in breaking down scientific principle so that they are understandable.

Photography

I have an MFA in Photography from Washington State University. I have taken and taught courses in black and white, color, large format, and printing. I now work primarily with a digital camera.

Writing

I started writing by doing creative writing and am familiar with poetry, short stories and even one act plays. I do extensive science writing as well as tutoring students in many different fields, so I am familiar with many of the forms for writing essays. I also have taken some history and anthropology courses, as well as helping students in those disciplines, so I am familiar with the research needed for those disciplines. Writing well is an important skill, but it takes practice. I therefore like to give exercises that will make that practice less tedious while at the same time, improving my students' skills.
