Nazareth College of Rochester, New York (Master's)
I have more than four years of classroom experience in New York State. I hold a Quad Certification from Nazareth College of Rochester, NY which includes General and Special Education Grades 1-6, Special Education Grades 5-9, and English Education Grades 5-9. I also received my Master’s degree in Literacy Birth-6.
I have experience in each of the grades in which I am certified including in-depth experience in second, third, and fourth grade. I taught sixth grade for two years before relocating. The majority of my experience has been in inner-city urban schools where behavior management, strong relationships with students and parents, and diversity are key aspects of teaching. These experiences have helped define my teaching philosophy.
I believe EVERY student can succeed to his or her full potential regardless of economic background, learning needs, behavior, or social challenges if given the right tools by a knowledgeable teacher. This means using student interests and strengths to engage them and build their skill set. Whenever possible I like to teach using an investigative approach using hands-on learning. This means allowing students to take part in their own learning through self-discovery while engaging them in real-life, meaningful, hands-on activities. Giving students real-life lessons provides meaning and purpose to learning. Giving choices and/or numerous ways to solve problems gives students power and increases their chance of success. I believe my philosophy of meaningful and engaging learning increases success and interest in school.
I am an outdoor enthusiast and enjoy various activities. Some of my outdoor interests include hiking, mountain biking, kayaking, sailing, and wildlife photography. I enjoy watching football and playing many different sports, but my favorites are basketball, soccer, and softball. I recently completed a continuous hike of the 2,185 mile Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine. I mention this because it taught me more about commitment, dedication, hard work, friendship, and self-discovery, all of which are important in education.
I love teaching young enthusiastic students, and motivating others. I hope I can get the chance to know you better and share more about myself if you have any other specific questions. Thank you and have a great day!

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
