About Lori

As a high school English, journalism, and computer literacy teacher for over 16 years, I spent many hours with students helping them improve their literacy skills; but it was the time spent as director of one-act plays or Odyssey of the Mind coach that really helped me learn to connect with students.

Understanding how others communicate and absorb information is key to delivering instruction. Many people have never considered how they learn and what learning style is most effective for them. Working one-on-one in a tutorial setting allows individuals to communicate in ways that are nearly impossible to achieve in a classroom setting.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

During 16 years of teaching in public education, there were times I taught computer literacy to elementary and secondary students. At one point, I contemplated obtaining an elementary certificate and took teaching methods coursework and ESL/ESOL training. In addition, I have been certified in K-12 reading in Montana. University transcripts available on request.

English

I received my BA in English from Ohio State University. In addition, I taught English language arts for 16 years in public school.

ESL/ESOL

My English/language arts teaching career in Texas included eleven years working on the Texas-Mexico border. During this time I participated in multiple extended workshop training sessions in ESL/ESOL at University of Texas -- El Paso. Additionally, I have traveled extensively communicating with folks in languages other than my own.

Grammar

I received my BA in English from Ohio State University. In addition, I taught English language arts for 16 years in public school.

Literature

I received my BA in English from The Ohio State University. In addition, I taught English language arts for 16 years in public school.

Phonics

Phonics is one method used to develop reading skills by teaching the beginning reader the connection between sound and meaning symbolized by letters and their combinations. Phonics awareness develops more confident readers with better vocabulary development strategies, especially when combined with whole language and word recognition skills.

Having been certified in K-12 reading at the University of Montana, I have a strong background in phonics instruction.

Reading

My graduate coursework includes certification as a reading specialist. My expertise was expanded and refined over 15 years teaching reading/language arts in the public school system.

Study Skills

Over 16 years as a classroom teacher, I often included study skills and strategies as part of the curriculum to help students approach their courses. These strategies have proven useful for students ranging from 5th grade to graduate school. My academic preparation includes coursework specific to reading improvement, which is extremely effective in improving all areas of academic study.

TEAS

The TEAS exam (Test of Essential Academic Skills) covers critical literacy skills in all subject areas. Having taken the GRE (Graduate Record Exam) and completed one graduate degree with near completion of a second, I believe my academic preparation has given me the skills to tutor students for the TEAS. Graduate diploma available if requested.
