About Fiona

Hello! I’m currently a senior at the University of Montana majoring in English linguistics and minoring in Japanese.

I’ve already worked as an ESL tutor on my own, helping out exchange students. I have a lot of experience “translating” into standard English, and have worked online as a proofreader since I was 15 years old.

I’ve also written a textbook on Sindarin (one of Tolkien’s Elvish languages).

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I'm an English-Linguistics Major at the University of Montana. I've been practicing my editing skills since I was a teenager by editing amateur fiction. Because of my knowledge of Linguistics, I am uniquely qualified to answer questions about English grammar and pronunciation.

ESL/ESOL

As a linguist, I have studied the inner workings of English extensively. Because of this, I can explain why English works the way it does, not just how. I've very good at syntax and semantics, but most of all, I can help you with English pronunciation.

When I was young, I had a bound tongue - a birth defect that limited my tongue's range of motion. So, when it was corrected, I had to relearn how to speak. This has given me an edge on understanding how sounds are produced. With that understanding, I can better coach you in pronouncing words correctly.

I also have experience tutoring non-native English speakers in conversation and essay-writing skills.

Grammar

I have a degree in English-Linguistics from the University of Montana. This means that not only do I know English grammar well, but I can explain why grammatical rules are the way they are. This is especially helpful for ESL students.

Proofreading

I have a degree in English-Linguistics at the University of Montana. Growing up with a dyslexic younger brother, I had to learn to proofread at a young age in order to help make his papers understandable. Since then, I've been in several writing workshops and learned how to give effective criticism.

Reading

I have a bachelor's degree in English-Linguistics from the University of Montana. This degree is half English literature and half Linguistics. I've been an avid reader since I was young, and I can help students look deeper into texts to understand their contexts.

Vocabulary

I have a degree in English-Linguistics Major from the University of Montana. Historical linguistics is the study of how language changes over time, and it is an area that I excel at. I can explain why a word is spelled a certain way and how its meaning changed over time. I can also help students understand dictionary entrees more fully.

Writing

I have a degree in English-Linguistics from the University of Montana. While most students hated writing papers, I found that I enjoy it greatly. By teaching students how to focus on a narrow topic and how to research, I can relieve a lot of the stress involved in paper writing.

Very helpul and patient tutor

Fiona can both direct a structured lesson and lead a free conversation on a given topic. After the lesson, she sent me a comprehensive review of what she did for my wife, which is very helpful, especially for the fact that I was not at home when she tutored my wife.
