About Phillip

My teaching stems from my love of learning as my father taught that teaching is a higher form of learning. Early in my life I learned that all aspects of the real world is informed through academic learning and vice versa. Proficiency in academic and practical spheres makes for greater success in life, and for far greater enjoyment in one’s life experience.

Since graduating from high school in South Africa, I have served in a number of different military units, travelled extensively in Africa, served in humanitarian aid and disaster relief missions globally, taught and instructed youth and adults in life skills, sailed wooden Tall Ships, graduated with bachelors and masters degrees and am working on my PhD. My teaching experience is global and includes serving as Faculty and Program Director for the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh in Scotland and as Faculty for the Colorado community College System. I have been awarded with various honors including a Faculty Gold award for excellence in teaching.

My specializations are Sociocultural Anthropology, Medical Anthropology and Global Public Health. I have both studied these at a higher academic level and practiced them in the field, globally, serving to bring into my teaching that real-world experience that ties together academic theory with on-the-ground evidence based practice.

A large focus of my undergraduate and graduate studies revolved around effective academic writing, public speaking and literature. This has further been a key activity within my professional life delivering presentations, training deliveries, and writing reports and proposals. As such I have learned the most effective methods to help me excel in these and that is what I deliver to you in my tutoring.

I pride myself on my student-centered tutoring approach. As part of this approach, I actively seek out student areas of interest and experience and tie these to the learning material to provide an effective and interesting learning experience. I work at engendering active student-tutor interaction as this enhances learning on multiple levels. Irrespective of the subject under study, my main approach is to teach the student the skills for effective learning, research and application of academics to real life using the course material as vehicle. I would like to hear from you and discuss how I can help you with your unique and important needs.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anthropology

I have completed a Masters degree in Cultural Anthropology from the University of Montana as well as 57 credits towards a PhD in Anthropology. During my tenure as faculty for the Department of Anthropology at the Colorado Community Colleges online I wrote and taught the first year cultural and biological anthropology courses. A number of other courses I have developed and teach for the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh are rooted in sociocultural and medical anthropology in addition to the public health and clinical aspects.

Archaeology

As part of my anthropological studies I had to obtain a grounding in archaeology as anthropology is a four-field approach to the discipline, namely anthropology, archaeology, bio anthropology, and linguistics. In addition to this I have received an undergraduate research grant from the national science foundation for archaeological reconstruction of a Greco-Roman siege machine, a ballista in order to recreate and examine the construction process and tactical use of such machines. This project relied on international collaboration with archaeologists and historians specializing in this field.
