I have 10 years of teaching and tutoring experience from a high school teacher to a college adjunct professor. I've taught: AP Calculus AB, GED, Physics, College Algebra, Trigonometry, Geometry, and Algebra. I have my Master's in Education (MEd) from the University of Utah in math and physics.

I specialize in AP Calculus AB and AP Calculus BC with 500+ hours tutoring these two subjects. During my 4 years of teaching AP Calculus AB, my students averaged a 4.2/5 on the AP exam.

I specialize in AP Calculus AB and AP Calculus BC with 500+ hours tutoring these two subjects. During my 4 years of teaching AP Calculus AB, my students averaged a 4.2/5 on the AP exam.

I also specialize in GED math. During my 3 years of teaching adults at the Salt Lake County jail, I helped 200+ adults pass the GED test.

From 2009 - 2013 I taught math full-time at a private high school: AP Calculus AB (for 4 years), Geometry (for 3 years) and PreCalculus (for 1 year). Much of that time was working with students one on one during or outside of class.

From 2015-2018 I taught the GED for adults at the Salt Lake County jail. During that time, I had over 200 graduates pass their final math GED test and complete their GED.

In the summer of 2019 I taught Math 1010 (College Algebra) at Salt Lake Community College. My students passed the course at a much higher rate than the average.

From 2018 - 2020 I taught high school physics, with an emphasis on conceptual learning and data collection in order to derive relevant formulas. I love teaching physics basics.

I understand the need for math tutors since the textbooks provide so few examples to work from! I'm a patient teacher and am able to tutor from the basic levels to the more advanced. I work to break down the problems into manageable parts, and give guidance on general problem solving tactics. I let the students do the work, and I ask leading questions to get them thinking in the right area. I don't just sit there and solve problems for them (since that doesn't help!).

I enjoy seeing students build confidence in math, but more importantly, confidence in themselves.

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

Algebra 1 is a subject area that I am very familiar tutoring. I taught and lived at a boarding school where the students in my residence hall were mostly 8th and 9th graders taking Algebra and I would help tutor them regularly.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

Having taught Calculus and Precalculus, I came across many Algebra 2 topics which I am confident in teaching or tutoring. It can be a tricky subject without a firm understanding of trigonometry, algebra I, and geometry all of which I am very familiar with. I would be able to put together additional problems and/or resources pertaining to the topic being tutored.
Calculus,

Calculus

I taught AP Calculus AB for four years. During that time, 51% of my students received 5s on the AP exam (the highest score possible) and the average of all my students' scores was 4.2. I have attended numerous AP Calculus conferences to pick up clever ideas to convey concepts. I work to have students break down problems into manageable parts and work through them on their own.
Physics,

Physics

I completed a Physics Minor at the University of Utah having taken the following courses: Physics I & II (with labs), Quantum Physics, and an elective. I am comfortable with Physics I concepts as well as most aspects of Physics II. My calculus background allows the mathematical computational aspect to be a particular strength.
Prealgebra,

Prealgebra

Having taught high school math for years I am very familiar with all of the concepts of Prealgebra. One of my strengths as a teacher and tutor is an ability to break down problems into smaller and more manageable parts and concepts. This is a skill that would allow me to explain the topics of Prealgebra well. It is a critical subject area, as all of future math courses seek to build upon its foundations.
Precalculus,

Precalculus

Having taught Precalculus for 1 year and Calculus for 4 years, I am very familiar with the subject material. With a solid understanding of Calculus, I would be able to help explain how some of the topics will be relevant in the student's future math courses. I can also help them navigate their TI calculator to effectively set up problems.
SAT Math

SAT Math

Having taught a range of courses from Geometry up to AP Calculus AB, I have a wide range of experience in teaching and tutoring across many math topics - an ideal SAT math tutor. Having studied Applied Mathematics at William and Mary, I have a firm background in a variety of math subject areas. I would be happy to put together SAT Math practice problem packets as well.

ACT Math,

ACT Math

Trigonometry

Having taught Precalculus (with a large amount of trigonometric topics), I would not only be able to help students understand Trigonometry, but also understand what types of real-world problems that it can be used to solve. It can be a difficult subject area to understand and visualize, but I would work to explain and visually demonstrate what is happening in Trigonometry. I have a number of resources available to put together practice problems.

Personable and Patient Tutor

Stephen was patient with me and had seen people like me before, so he knew what to focus on. He also provided me with useful phrases and rhymes that made equations easier to remember without constantly referring to my notebook.

Kind and patient tutor

I had two lessons with Stephen so far. He is very kind and patient tutor. I did have trouble with his explanation sometimes but I need to take more lessons to judge that part. So far, he is a good tutor.

Excellent and patient tutor

Steve is an excellent tutor, who patiently reviewed AP Calculus with my son. My son looked forward to his lessons, and surprisingly enjoyed working through the Calculus topics with Steve. Thank you for all you do Steve!

Awesome

Very awesome teacher, knows his math and understands how to say it in a way that I understand. Also sent me a practice packet containing ap calculus bc stuff. Definitely recommend 10/10.

Patient, kind, smart and super helpful!

Stephen tutored my daughter several hours to help her prepare for her comprehensive physics exam. Because she spent most of her year schooling from home she had gaps and needed help. Stephen was the best! He was super calm and had perfect analogies and helped to explain physics in a way that was easy for her to understand. Working with him also gave her the confidence she needed. I highly recommend him! He was also very flexible and helped to find times that worked with her schedule.

Ann , 2 lessons with Stephen

Very helpful!!

My daughter was stressed about an upcoming Calculus test, and after meeting once with Steve, she was confident! In her understanding of the (very difficult!) material!

Fantastic!!

My son is taking AP calculus and came to me a few weeks ago wanting help preparing for the exam at the end of the year. After the very first session, my son said he wanted to meet with Stephen as much as he could before the exam. I was shocked (and thrilled). For my son to want to do more says everything to me! Stephen is also so fast to respond and very flexible. Beyond all expectations— highly recommend!

Great calculus tutor

Stephen taught Calculus to my daughter who is in her second year at COS. She was very pleased with the short explanations and also with the alternative perspective to the topic of Series. She was planning for a three-hour review but 1 hour of class was enough. Thank you
