About Reginald

My professional interests are in math and science education, geophysics, applied mathematics, computer programming, and data processing. I currently have a Master of Science degree in Mathematics and I feel that my background will be an advantage to your student.

I have taught high school science, algebra, physics, geometry, applied math, honors geometry and physics, and college level algebra and trigonometry. I trained teachers to use the TI-83 graphing calculator. In addition, I have used the Internet, PowerPoint presentations, and the Renaissance Accelerated Math computer program to enhance the learning experience in my classroom. Recently, I took the Project Synergy Algebra/Physical Science Project.

Kids need mentors, discipline, and clear expectations for behavior and achievement. It is my contention that attitudes about mathematics are: it is difficult, cold, abstract, and ultra-rational. In addition, many students have important concepts wrong. For varied individuals, this is associated with anxiety and failure. Fluency is best developed on a strong conceptual base. I chose teaching, to change attitudes about mathematics and to put a human face on the subject.

Students must learn mathematics with understanding, actively building new knowledge from experience and prior knowledge. Also, they must have efficient, accurate, and generalizable methods for computing. Students should be actively engaged in learning, and be responsible for their own behavior. Without the ability to compute effectively, the students’ ability to solve complex and interesting problems is limited.

The learner should be comfortable with mathematics and take risks without experiencing failure, is of paramount importance. Hopefully, they will become active and independent learners, who view learning as a lifelong process and develop a love for learning.

I deem that the focus should be on the whole person, including physical, social, emotional, and intellectual growth. I intend to build on their strengths and address their needs at their developmental level. I offer the opportunity for success and provide experiences, which are also challenging. My knowledge of computers, mathematics, and science will in no doubt benefit your child.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Differential Equations

I took advanced calculus with differential equations at Bronx Community College in 1973, Grade B. BS and MS in math, working on a PhD. Used differential equations in most of my math and engineering courses. Certified math and physics teacher.
