I am a life-long learner, having completed an International Baccalaureate Diploma, a BA and a PhD, and over the years I blossomed into a teacher. I’ve taught undergraduate and graduate students for over 6 years in the areas of linguistics, psychology, neuroscience, and, most recently, English as a Second Language. In 2009, I received an award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching from my graduate degree department.

I also have extensive research experience with language development and genetics, with typically developing children and those with autism spectrum disorders. Thus I know a lot about statistical data analysis in Excel, SPSS and R; writing abstracts and manuscripts; making oral and poster PowerPoint presentations; and interacting with children and teenagers with a range of language and cognitive abilities.

While my primary specialty in tutoring is English, especially all areas of English as a Second Language, I can also help with a foreign language (all levels of Russian, and beginner French and Portuguese), math (especially statistics), and natural sciences.

My approach to tutoring is very thorough. I like to make sure that my students understand not only the big ideas, but also some important details. I firmly believe in the positive effects of homework, when it is done, but I can also be flexible and incorporate home-/class-work assignments into tutoring sessions. I also like to tailor lessons to students’ particular needs on the particular day.

Please feel free to contact me to discover more about what I can offer to you, and how we could work together to help you learn and improve!

Public Speaking

During my time as a graduate student and a postdoc at MIT, I made numerous oral and poster presentations, at the departmental, national, and international level conferences. Additionally, during my time at the A.C.E. Language Institute at Montana State University, I taught listening and speaking classes to intermediate and advanced ESL students. I helped students work on formal and informal presentations, including impromptu speeches, persuasive and informative speeches, group problem solving presentations and individual poster presentations. I promoted the use of PowerPoint in formal presentations, and the use of 3x5 index cards in informal presentations. I closely worked with students to develop and organize their ideas, and to help them learn how to relax and effectively use body language and eye contact.

Macintosh

I have worked with Macintosh computers for the last twenty years. I am not a programmer, but I am a proficient end user. From editing photos and videos, to using Facetime and setting preferences, I can help students get comfortable with the MacOS environment.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

During my time as a graduate student and postdoc at MIT, I worked with nearly a hundred children and teenagers with various autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and their parents. My supervisors and I involved them in our studies of language development and impairment. As a result of assessing language and cognition in many participants with ASD, I learned the nuances of their behavior and how to best work with them. I am most comfortable working with people with milder forms of ASD, including high-functioning autism and Asperger syndrome.
