About Alex

Bio

I have several years of experience tutoring students primarily in Physics, Engineering, and Math (particularly Calculus, but other topics as well) at the college level. I am available to tutor Math and Physics at the high school level as well. I have a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from Michigan State University and a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Michigan. In addition, I have about five years of experience working in industry as an engineer.

I love to see students improve through our tutoring sessions. I'm willing to use the sessions however the students choose, but my preference is to focus on getting students to understand the concepts behind each topic and problem, rather than just learning how to solve specific problems. I believe a strong understanding of these concepts leads to much greater success in these types of subjects.

In addition to these, I have experience with some more specialized topics (acoustics, complex analysis, linear algebra, among others). I've also spent substantial amounts of time writing code in MATLAB (which I do on a daily basis) and am comfortable assisting with MATLAB-based homework and projects.

Please contact me to learn more and talk about an initial session!

Calculus,

Calculus

My engineering education required extensive use of calculus. I am comfortable with my knowledge, and believe that once students understand the foundations of the topic, they often find it much less intimidating.
Physics,

Physics

A degree in engineering requires daily use and knowledge of physics. This is a comfortable topic for me, and the one that I have the most experience tutoring.

Differential Equations,

Differential Equations

I received a 4.0 in my undergraduate differential equations course. I continue to apply what I have learned regularly in graduate school. In addition, I took a graduate level math course which covered portions of ordinary differential equation theory.
Linear Algebra,

Linear Algebra

I received a 4.0 in my undergraduate linear algebra course. In addition, I took a graduate level math course that spent approximately one third of the semester on linear operator theory.

Knowledgeable and Patient

I’ve had several sessions with Alex over the last couple of months for MATLAB and he’s been really helpful. He’s been able to go over and help me understand concepts from my weeks course material. Making sure I’ve understood what we just went over. He even set up a lesson plan overview on his own for us to go over that covered both the basics and concepts I’ve learned throughout the semester knowing I’d be needing them for future reference i.e. a job. He’s also relatively fast in responding which makes it easier for me personally knowing he’s really skilled with programming and flexible with availability.

Very knowledgeable and Patient

Alex worked with me on Acoustics principals and understanding sound waves, their frequencies, and resulting mathematics equations. I found his teaching style to be very helpful and a key component to my success in my current graduate level course

Very helpful

My son has only seen him once so far, but thought he was very helpful helping him catch up with AP Physics mechanics.
