About Sarah

Hello! I have several years of teaching experience, including work with elementary, high school, and college students. I have two master's degrees: one in psychology and one in special education. I have been teaching and tutoring math (elementary math, algebra, geometry, statistics) for over seven years. I am also a registered nurse and have started tutoring pathophysiology, pharmacology, and medical/surgical courses over the last year.

No matter the subject, I believe the most important part of teaching is helping students develop a framework for thinking and a consistent method of problem-solving. If we know the right questions to ask, we can usually find the correct answer. Having a solid approach to problem solving is also an integral part of to building confidence and developing into a life-long learner. I look forward to working with my students to ensure we share our strengths and knowledge with each other.

I currently tutor in the Gainesville, VA, area or in the online setting. I welcome inquiries about the online tutoring process and work with parents and students of all ages to help that process work well. Since I tutor a wide variety of subjects, my rate reflects the highest of the subjects. However, prices may vary depending on the subject being tutored and the location (face-to-face versus online). Additional considerations to rate changes may include group tutoring, etc.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

I earned a Master's degree in Special Education from George Mason University. Through both my educational training and my teaching experience, I have acquired a number of techniques and teaching strategies to help with Attention-Deficit Disorder/Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

Algebra 1

While many of us may be unaware of it, we use algebra in our lives on a daily basis. For adults, we may be unaware of the presence of algebra because we have internalized the processes and forgotten the names of the steps. But for younger students, algebra seems to be an abstract foreign language. The key to success is illustrating the concepts in a way that links the processes to meaningful situations. I work with my students to find real-life examples of algebra concepts to help the true application and meaning of algebra come to life.

Algebra 2

Algebra 2 is a critical juncture in which math begins to turn toward the more abstract. I recognize this is a point in which students--even those who have been successful in math--begin to struggle. I work with students at this level to encourage them to recognize how to use information and skills they already have to help them solve problems that seem overwhelming. At this stage, we work hard on developing critical thinking and problem solving skills and use group discussion that looks more like how students might use a college-level study group.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have two master's degrees: one in psychology and one in special education. I have taken numerous classes on curriculum in the elementary classroom and teaching across the curriculum. In addition to this background, I have several years of teaching and tutoring experience at the elementary level.

Elementary Math

Math can be a challenging subject for students of any age. A strong foundation in elementary math sets the stage for student success in higher-level math courses. Elementary math includes performing the basic mathematic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division), as well as the ability to manipulate fractions, find an unknown quantity, and compare different units. For many, successful grasping of these concepts come through the use of manipulatives, visual graphics, and graphic organizers.

Geometry

Geometry is a complex branch of mathematics dealing with shapes, their properties, and their movements in space. For many students, the introduction of geometry is challenging and abstract. I work with geometry students to model shapes, their properties, and their changes in location throughout space. I believe being able to bridge the informational gap between concrete, representational, and abstract concepts is the way to helping students understand and internalize the meaning of geometric concepts.

Nursing

I have a BSN and currently work as a registered nurse. I have been tutoring nursing students in such topics as pathophysiology, pharmacology, and medical/surgical nurses for approximately two years.

Prealgebra

Prealgebra bridges the gap between elementary math and algebra. During prealgebra, students begin looking past the rules of math and begin acquiring an understand of the underlying mechanisms of math. Some think of this as a concentration on the "why" of math. Such thinking helps students prepare for the more abstract processes of algebra.

Psychology

Psychology is the study of human behavior. Though we may take it for granted, psychology is all around us. Psychology explains how we learn behaviors--both good behaviors and bad behaviors--and how we interact with others. Psychology is the basis of influence and has incredible impacts on health.

My passion for psychology led me to earn a Bachelor's degree in psychology and a Master's degree in biological and health psychology. I have nearly ten years of psychology research experience with a focus on addiction and behavioral learning. My academic and experiential learning in psychology supplements my training in special education and allows me to tailor my teaching to meed the needs of my students. I do this all while making the underlying mechanisms of psychology as relevant as possible.

SAT Math

SAT success can go a long way in helping students gain acceptance into the college of their dreams and embark on the path of success. SAT lessons provide students with familiarity of the SAT format, strategies for success on the SAT, and concepts covered on the exam.

Special Needs

I earned a Master's Degree in Special Education from George Mason University. The training I received in that program prepared me for working with students with a wide variety of special needs. I have teaching experience as a special educator both in a co-teaching setting and working with individual students on my caseload. I have primarily working with students with ADHD, students with specific learning disabilities related to math and reading, and students with behavior disorder.

Statistics

I have an extensive background in psychology research, including several publications in peer-reviewed journals. I have taken several semesters of graduate-level statistics classes, including ANOVA, regression, and structural equation modeling. I work hard to help students in both high school and undergraduate levels understand the basics of statistics, the meaning behind the mathematics, and how to interpret and write about statistics in a meaningful way.

Writing

I have a master's degree in psychology and have spent nearly ten years performing psychological research. I have several articles published in peer-reviewed journals. Through this experience and my history of teaching writing at various levels, I believe I can help you become an effective scientific writer!

Very helpful!

Sarah helped with my statistics. She was patient and helpful. She was prepared by researching and double-checking information. She found me a reference page for me to use to determine the type of test I needed to run in the problems I had for my assignment.
