About Sam

Hello, everybody!

My name is Sam, and I am an illustrator, fine artist, and an educator. Art and teaching are two of my biggest passions in life, and I can imagine no greater thing than combining the two to inspire other artists to share their talent with the world.

I received my bachelor's of fine arts degree from a small private art school in Laguna Beach, California called the Laguna College of Art and Design. My major was illustration with emphasis in drawing and painting, and as such, I have training in both classical styles and mediums of art passed down through fine arts over the course of history as well as in contemporary styles and mediums that are being used today in the illustration and graphics industries. My personal work consists primarily of portraiture, landscapes, and fantasy/sci-fi art. I use predominantly oil paints (of the water soluble variety), watercolors, and digital mediums, though I am well-versed in many other mediums, including drawing mediums. Since graduating in 2008, I have had my work published in local newspapers, books, and displayed in galleries. I have had the opportunity to work with the Senior Art Directors at Blizzard Entertainment designing illustrations for the World of Warcraft trading card series.

In 2011, I decided to return to school to pursue a master's in education (which I am in the process of completing) and finished my 14 week student teaching placement at Billings West High teaching intro and intermediate level students ranging from 9th-12th grade. I have also taught art privately and at the middle school level. I have completed enough coursework to qualify for a Montana teaching license, and expect to receive it in February of 2013, and I am now working as a substitute teacher in the Billings school district.

I try to incorporate ties to art history as well as current references in each of the lessons I teach and often demo and work alongside my students so that the steps involved in creating a work of art can be clearly seen and experienced. I believe in patience, encouragement, and positivity, as these are natural counters to the old saying that "An artist is his own worst critic."

I am very much looking forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Adobe Photoshop

I've used Adobe Photoshop a lot over the years, though I use it primarily for drawing and painting, as opposed to photo editing. I do, however, know how to use a great deal of the photo-editing features inherent in Photoshop. Some of the related courses I've taken using Photoshop over the years include:

Fundamentals of Digital Imaging
Computer Imaging
Computer Illustration 1
Concept Sketchbook
Senior Portfolio 1 & 2

Drawing

I have been drawing ever since I can remember, and I've had a great deal of training in drawing throughout the course of my education. Learning to draw complex objects comes through practice and careful observation. Learning to draw the four basic shapes (cubes, spheres, cylinders, and cones) and applying those schema to complex objects is essential. All complex objects can be broken down and more easily understood by utilizing this method. Some of the relevant courses I've had in drawing include:

Fundamentals of Drawing
Figure Drawing (x3)
2D Design
Perspective
Visual Thinking
Fundamentals of Illustration
Portrait Drawing
Rendering
Concept Sketchbook
Artistic Anatomy

Painting

Painting is my favorite artistic medium. Learning how to apply not only Value, but also Value as it pertains to Color to a work of art is essential to creating a great painting. I've taken a number of painting classes over the years, and I've had plenty of experience with the following paint mediums, though my favorites will always be oils and watercolors:

Oils (traditional and water-soluble)
Watercolors
Gouache
Acrylics
Tempera
Egg-Tempera

I am also well-versed in a digital painting program called Corel Painter, as well as in digital painting with Adobe Photoshop. Some of the relevant classes I've taken include:

Color Theory
Fundamentals of Painting
Fundamentals of Illustration
Figure Painting (x2)
Color Illustration
Illustrative Painting
Materials and Techniques
Editorial Illustration
Painting 2
Watercolor
Senior Portfolio (x2)
Group Figure Composition
