University of Idaho (Elementary Education)
My credentials include k-12 certification in teaching reading from the state of Montana Office of Public Instruction as well as a k-8 elementary teaching certificate. I also have an bachelor's degree in elementary educations and a master's degree in education with an emphasis in reading. I supervised reading tutors at the university in their reading tutoring program. I started an elementary tutoring program in an elementary school and was one of the main tutors for the program in its first year. I developed and ran the reading program for a year at an elementary school, and have real world experience in administering and scoring a wide variety of reading assessments to pinpoint your child's strengths and weaknesses. In addition, I have experience teaching the various skills and constructs needed for students to be successful readers. I also have experience teaching science, language arts and math to elementary students, as well as a semester teaching 8th grade math and science.
My approach to tutoring is to determine the expectations of the parents and student as well as the strengths and weaknesses of the student. I believe in using the child's strengths to help support and build up the weaker areas in which the tutoring is needed. I also believe learning is a fun and exciting endeavor. I have many learning games, and can make any subject enjoyable as well as a pleasant challenge to the child. Every tutoring experience is different, so I have no generic answers. After the initial discussions of needs and relevant assessments, then an individual plan of tutoring for each student will be developed and explained to both the parents and child so their input can be added to the plan before implementation. I think reading is a rewarding and fun experience with varied purposes, and I hope to share my love of reading with your child. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
