Bio

Hi I'm Anika! I graduated from Bellevue College with an Associate's in Science in physics, engineering and atmospheric sciences at the age of 18. I received a full-ride scholarship to the University of Washington to study physics in 2019 as well as a research grant for Electrical and Computer Engineering at the U.S. Naval Academy in 2017 to study under Commander Bob Bruninga and Dr. Jin S. Kang. I have been tutoring mostly my high school and college peers due to always being a few years ahead...

Jin S. Kang. I have been tutoring mostly my high school and college peers due to always being a few years ahead in each subject. I have about 6 years of tutoring experience between hundreds of students ranging from elementary school age to college age. On average my students improve with 2-3 letter grades per month.

My teaching techniques incorporate explaining complicated concepts in extremely simple terms, finding and applying what learning technique (visual, auditory, logical, linguistic, etc.) allows the student to learn most efficiently, and finally connecting the students interests and hobbies to math and physics through analogies or examples that resonate with their personal learning technique and experiences. There is also a lot of live practice because I personally believe practicing STEM subjects is crucial to lifting figurative road blocks. My tutoring sessions are always sprinkled with jokes since laughter induces serotonin in the brain which encourages better learning and long term memory retention.

Feel free to contact me anytime with any additional questions, comments, concerns, and scheduling, I always respond quickly (within a few hours). I openly welcome any resources or suggestions students or parents would like to provide, I am here to benefit learners as much as possible.

Hungarian

I was born in America and raised in both Hungary and America. I can speak both languages fluently and without any sort of accent (maybe a slight Hungarian accent in English but only for the trained and astute ear). I can read, write and teach fluently in both languages with a large vocabulary to learn from. Hungarian is a very hard language to learn but a lot of the words are made up, so if you can infer what they mean, you already know half the language. Come see me to learn more!

Elementary Education

Elementary Math,

Elementary Math

Over the course of this past 2 years, I've taught countless elementary school students. Parents tell me that their child used to despise math and were bored out of their minds from the way regular school taught them math but with me, they're extremely excited to sit down and have some fun in our math tutoring session. They're excited to draw diagrams, sort numbers, put together puzzles, play math games, get timed for how fast they can do their multiplication tables, etc. I've always been very good with kids and I think my patient and caring but also funny personality incorporate well with kids who would like someone to look up to and learn math from.

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

I have countless hours of teaching experience for students struggling in algebra 1. A lot of my students learned almost the entirety of algebra 1 early by getting a head start from pre-algebra and a lot of my algebra 1 students finished algebra 1 four to five months earlier than their school did and could move on to geometry or algebra 2 earlier than expected, regardless of the speed at which they learned. It was very inspiring and lots of parents were shocked that their children were progressing so quickly with our tutoring sessions. I'm very happy to be a part of that experience.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

Since I was 15 I have been tutoring my peers in algebra 2. It's one of my favorite subjects to teach since it has the most opportunity to break down complex ideas to the point that it sounds like 2+2. Algebra 2 is also the most used math skill in almost all STEM subjects so it's imperative to get it down well. I've helped hundreds of students understand algebra 2 at a deep and unforgettable level.

Prealgebra,

Prealgebra

I've been tutoring students my age, younger and older than me since I was about 14. Many of the neighborhood parents would call me over to tutor them because they knew that not only was I excellent with kids, but I was also going to be entering college at 15 for a physics degree. I've tutored and taught many of these neighborhood kids every week for a small paycheck, or in exchange for some homecooked food and deserts. Their parents were always very grateful that I could somehow get their children to focus for a long enough time for them to complete their homework with high accuracy and for them to learn how to store their knowledge in the long term memory.
Precalculus,

Precalculus

I've taught many high school aged, college aged and returning to college aged students pre-calculus. Recently, one student in particular inspired me greatly. She's failed pre-calc 2 times already and retook the class again this year but this time opted to have me as a tutor. Within just 2 weeks of 2x a week sessions, she went from not understanding anything, to being a month ahead of the rest of the college class and acing all her homework, quizzes and tests. I was astonished at her progress and am very humbled to be a part of her learning experience.

Many of my past students learned to love trig and pre-calc. Once we went over some tricks for learning the unit circle in 20 minutes, clarifying how to puzzle out trigonometric functions and how to graph any trig function, they were mesmerized by how circular trigonometry is (no pun intended). They were able to deepen their understanding to the point that they absorbed new trigonometric knowledge at an exponential rate.

GED,

GED

I've studied the GED for a year when I was 16, I took the test and with my first try I got the highest score on the math section. These past few years, I've taught around 4-5 other students to do the same with different test techniques, teaching the entirety of the math GED to them with example problems, timed practice tests, etc. Currently I have one student who will take the GED soon and we've worked together once a week for about 4 months now and I think he is readily prepared. My student also struggles with dyslexia and now has the math skills mastered to ace the GED.

Great teacher!

Today was my daughter’s first session with Annika. (She is taking the Accuplacer test soon). We had a glitch in connecting to the session but Annika made sure to maximize what time she had left. Annika taught with total confidence and patience. My daughter felt very comfortable and confident during her session. Looking forward to the next ones!!

Wonderful Tutor

As my daughter puts it “Anika and I cover more material in one session than I did in three sessions with my previous tutors and she makes it fun”.
