I came back to the United States in 2015 after living in China for over 10 years. I spent all of those teaching Chinese people on all levels, from preschool to adult, from introductory to advanced business English and test prep. For seven of those 10 years two partners and I ran an English training school in Zhejiang province. I specialize in teaching English on all levels and I am TEFL certified. During my time in China I became fluent and literate in Chinese. I began teaching test prep almost 20 years ago, so I am also quite familiar with all manner of ETS testing. I am fluent and literate in Chinese, which may help bridge the communication barrier between Chinese students and me.

I have been playing guitar for almost 30 years, and I have been a serious student of the instrument for nearly that whole span of time. I have played in bands, including one which traveled to Europe, and recorded an album. I love advanced harmonic theory and I enjoy unraveling the mysteries of the fret-board. Before I moved to China I spent about a year teaching guitar as my primary job, and I have continued to have students intermittently since then.

I aim to keep classes as upbeat and lively as possible, maintaining the student's focus and interest however I can. I will assign homework and provide assessment according to the demands of the class and the needs of the student.

I look forward to meeting you and helping you on your successful education journey.

ESL/ESOL

ESL/ESOL

I lived in China for over ten years teaching ESL. I have a TEFL certification and I, with two partners, ran an English training school for 7 of my years in China. I have taught every age, from preschool to adult, and every level, from beginner to advanced business English. I have been teaching ESL online since my return to the U.S. I also spent my time in China studying Chinese seriously, and I continue to be a student of the language. This gives me the ability to better relate to my students. I employ an active teaching style which allows the students to be engaged in the class and overcome inhibitions about speaking.

English

ACT English,

ACT English

I began teaching standardized testing almost 20 years ago. In that time I have taught ACT, SAT, IELTS, and TOEFL. For four years I wrote and edited SAT tests, and, even though it is different from the ACT, it gave me a lot of experience in taking apart tests and seeing right to the heart of what test writers are looking for from students. It also gave me a lot of insight into the ways test writers trick students with deceptive answer choices. I try to instill in my students an approach which is as systematic as possible, allowing students to have an idea of what the right answer should look like before they begin scanning answer choices.

IELTS

I taught ESL in China for over ten years and taught standardized test prep in America. I also wrote and edited practice tests for training centers. During my time in China, I had several one-on-one students to whom I taught the IELTS spoken section. Though I never taught other portions systematically, I helped many students with individual problems on those different portions of the IELTS test. My strong background in teaching ESL and standardized testing has more than prepared me to help students professionally with the IELTS test. Also, I speak fluent Mandarin, which may help me bridge the gap with Chinese students who are not yet proficient at English.
SAT Reading

SAT Reading

I began teaching the SAT Reading almost 20 years ago. I also spent 4 years as a writer and editor of practice tests for an SAT training center. Even though the test has changed over the years, the best approach to taking the test is still a systematic one which allows students to have an idea of what the answer looks like before they scan answer choices. My experience gave me the ability to take apart tests and get right to the heart of what test writers are looking for from students. It also gave me insight into the way these writers will trick students with deceptive answer choices. I try to keep class as active as possible and draw out the knowledge my students already possess. This allows them to create meaningful associations in their mind which help them remember grammar, vocabulary, and important content.

Guitar

Guitar

I took private lessons from the ages of 10 to 18, as well as some music classes in college. I have been a serious student of the instrument since my teen years, and I taught guitar professionally for one year. Even though it was my primary source of income for only one year, I have had guitar students intermittently over the course of 18 years. I have been in several bands, including one which did a small tour in Ireland. I recorded a CD as part of my college senior thesis. I also partly funded a three-month trip around Europe by busking almost every day of the trip. My favorite aspects of teaching guitar are harmonic theory, chord-building, and the relationship between chords and scales. I enjoy unraveling the mystery of the fret-board. I will generally evaluate a student, find out what music the student likes, and decide what aspect of guitar playing is most suitable for the student to learn. It may be the positions of a scale, a style of finger-picking, a type of chord, or any of a multitude of aspects of playing the guitar. I will try to put it in the context of the music the student enjoys and arrange the lesson so that the student gets a chance to feel as though he or she is actually making music. I can teach all styles of popular music and give students a good foundation in Jazz theory and technique.
