About Kristina

I would be excited to tutor anyone of any age who needs assistance in biology, ecology, botany, or zoology. Also, I am proficient in and able to tutor English (including grammar, vocabulary, proofreading, reading, writing) and math (Pre-Algebra, Statistics). I have also taken and scored well on the ACT and GRE, and my study methods preparing for these exams helped very much. I understand how tests can intimidate and discourage many struggling students, so I would be happy to help students find comprehension and retention methods that work for them. For my teaching methods across subjects, I would assist with any specific questions and needs; but I would also assign additional tasks (i.e., homework) if I felt it necessary for the student to have a better comprehension of the material. For those wanting to better their ACT and GRE test scores, I would use current study guides, quizzes, and flash cards. Additionally, I periodically would inform the parent(s) of the student's progress.

My love of teaching started when I was a Teaching Assistant at Mississippi State University. Preparing lessons and enriching students' minds was such a rewarding process for me. Teaching is also learning, not only about the subject material but also about the student (e.g., how they absorb knowledge, what teaching strategies work best for each student to learn and retain the material). My other teaching experience is more informal: I have conducted outdoor bird banding workshops and nature walks, and I volunteered for the Science Club, an after school science enrichment course for 4th-6th graders, while at Mississippi State. I have a passion to learn and teach biology, and most of my course background and experience is in biology; however, I took several English courses in college, and I have retained much of my knowledge and interest in English, including grammar and reading. Though I use math very little in my day-to-day life now, I took many math courses in college (e.g., Applied Statistics, Calculus, Algebra) and did well in them.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

As an avid reader and writer, I have honed my skills of understanding English, including understanding proper sentence structure, correct grammar, and punctuation usage. I scored well on the ACT English test, and I found that the study guides helped very much with that. As this subject comes somewhat natural to me and I do enjoy it, I would be glad to tutor anyone who is looking to improve their ACT English scores.

ACT Reading

As an avid reader, I am always practicing reading comprehension. I read across the gamut - fiction, reference material, news articles, scientific research publications, popular articles, natural history, and american history. As an undergraduate, I enjoyed reading so much that I thought I wanted to be an English major. I did end up changing my major to Wildlife Ecology, but that didn't stop me from taking a few English courses just to get a good grade and have a good time reading and explicating what I read. I would love to tutor anyone looking to improve their reading skills.

Algebra 1

I did very well in Algebra while in school, taking and making A's in Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Algebra II, and College Algebra. Of all maths, I feel that algebra and statistics are the two that are used most in real-world scenarios. Therefore, I believe it is very important to have a firm grasp of these subjects. To help you with algebra, we will go through your lessons and assignments together and discuss any problem areas. Extra algebraic problems may be assigned if I feel it necessary for you to get a better grasp of a specific concept. Please consider me to be your tutor.

Biology

Biology is the basis for most of the coursework I studied in college and also for my professional career. As a student, I did well in biology, scoring A's and winning biology awards. I can credit this to not only my passion for this subject, but also to my study methods. I reviewed lessons daily and created study guides to help me do well in biology. I would be glad to help you also excel in biology.

Botany

I took several botany courses during my undergraduate and graduate studies at Arkansas State University Mississippi State University, respectively. These courses were required for my majors in Wildlife Ecology. I made A's in all of the courses and to this day maintain a profound interest in plants as I continue my studies with them. I hope to pass on this interest to any students I tutor.

Ecology

My major as an undergraduate was Wildlife Ecology and Management. As such, required courses were Ecology (basic), Animal Ecology, and the corresponding labs. Also, I took Environmental Biology and other courses which contribute to my overall understanding of ecology. I scored A's in all of the courses. Ecology is one my favorite subjects, and I would love to tutor anyone who is taking this course!

Elementary Math

I am very capable of working through elementary math. I feel that through practice problems and examples, anyone can get better at this subject. I would love to tutor anyone who needs help with elementary math. My methods would be to help them understand lessons and work through problems, while possibly assigning more problems if necessary to better understand the material.

English

I fared excellently in my Honor's English courses in high school. I always enjoyed the subject very much. Therefore, I took several English courses in college though I did not major in English. My interest to the subject and attention to its lessons, however, has not abated. I am consistently asked by my peers to help with writing and proofreading. I would love to help you do better in English, too!

Grammar

I am often asked by peers to edit their manuscripts, emails, etc. The reason for this is that I am very particular about correct grammar usage. I became this way while in college, when I thought I wanted to be an English major. I perfected the skill over time, honing it particularly when I was an Editorial Assistant for a scientific journal. I would very much enjoy sharing my knowledge of correct grammar usage with anyone who would like some extra refinement in this area.

GRE

My strongest score on the GRE was on writing and verbal reasoning sections. Using a study manual and flash cards, I developed effective methods to properly prepare for the test. I scored well on the math section also though I recall struggling with it more. What I learned is that it really just comes down to practice, practice, practice! I would be glad to help you prepare for this test.

Handwriting

I have always been complimented on my clear handwriting, both in script and cursive. I find that using handwriting worksheets helps with making nice letters. I would enjoy assisting with anyone looking to improve their handwriting.

Literature

I have bookshelves loaded with many great novels. Several of these were recommended or required reading in high school and college. I took a few literature courses in college because I enjoyed reading and explicating literary works. Many of these stories have stayed with me. There are still many others I need to read! I truly enjoy discussing famous writings and stories; and therefore, I would be a great tutor for literature for anyone with this need.

Prealgebra

I have taken Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Algebra II, and College Algebra, scoring A's in all of the courses and winning an award for Algebra II. While taking these courses, I helped several other students understand the subject matter.

Proofreading

I am often selected by my peers and other professionals to proofread their documents for errors. I have lots of experience doing so as I have worked as an Editorial Assistant for a major scientific journal, and I took many courses in college where my writing was very closely scrutinized. I have retained the lessons I have learned in the past through the writing I continue to do today. Let me help you be a better writer! I will make it as enjoyable an experience as possible.

Reading

As an avid reader, I am always honing my reading skills. I always did well in school with reading assignments, and I excelled on reading comprehension portions of tests. I believe that improving reading skills results from reading often and reading all kinds of materials. Let me help you become better at reading.

Spelling

Spelling can be so frustrating! However, there are lots of methods and hints that one can use to be a better speller. Through lots of practice, I have figured out ways to improve my spelling. If you need help in this subject, I'd be glad to do so.

Study Skills

Through trial and error, I learned what helps most when preparing for tests. I am a huge proponent of developing study guides and understanding what is necessary in the environment to have more effective studying sessions. My methods served me very well through high school and college, and I would love to share them with others.

Vocabulary

I am proud to say I have a pretty good vocabulary. This did not come easy to me. I had to learn lots of difficult words to pass the ACT and the GRE and to understand materials I read at college and materials I read for other purposes. As an avid reader, I am always strengthening and reinforcing my vocabulary. A dictionary and a thesaurus are amazing assets for this. I would be glad to assist anyone who wanted to improve their vocabulary, for testing purposes or for any other matter.

Writing

The best way to be a better writer is to write and do so often! There are many forms of writing and countless ways to convey messages. I have experience with persuasive writing, creative writing, scientific writing (published), and explicatory writing. I would love to help you become a better writer.

Zoology

Zoology was a basic course for my Wildlife Ecology and Management major at Arkansas State University. I did very well (A's) in the class and lab. It is probably one of the most fun intro courses I took, and I think it should be interesting and enjoyable for anyone who takes it. My passion for the subject material will surely shine through with my tutoring.
