About KAYLA

My love for teaching comes from my passion to learn. Graduating from two top-tier institutions, I have a good understanding of what it takes to be successful in school, particularly in preparation for college. During my second year of graduate business school at Cornell University, I tutored elementary and middle school students in Math at a math tutoring service company. From this experience, I have a thorough understanding and training for how to adapt to different types of learning, working with both students who excel in the discipline as well as those who had fallen behind their grade level.

I specialize in English, Math, Economics, and Business. Whether its high school geometry or middle school grammar, my main goal is to move students forward, based on their learning style and expertise level, while having fun! I will assign challenging homework after each session and will provide progress reports on a recurring basis.

I am fairly flexible with time, and only require a 6-hour cancellation notice. I also offer makeup classes. I am happy to meet in a local library or another quiet space that is convenient for the student.

I look forward to hearing from you.

I have taught math for over one year now, and have two degrees in math-centric disciplines.

I am familiar with the materials and have successfully taught students under the new Common Core.

I have worked with K-10th graders for the over one year now, and really enjoy this work.

As an Economics major, former Wall Street banker, recent MBA graduate, and Project Manager at a leading CDFI, I am well-versed in the business discipline from a theory and practice perspective.

Feel free to reach out to me to learn more about my qualifications and to schedule initial sessions.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Accounting

I have taken three accounting courses, two of which I received As. I understand the fundamentals of accounting very well and as a former banker, I have applied these methods in the workplace. Accounting is based on a series of rules and understanding those rules are fundamental to one's success.

ACT English

On the ACT, English was my highest score at 29. I attended an elite liberal arts college, where writing was paramount to my success in college. People often try to complicate the language, making sentences longer than they should be. Good English is short.

ACT Math

One of my strongest areas on the ACT was the Math, but I am also well versed in the English sections and can prepare you for the Reading/Science sections more generally. Preparing students for the test is a matter of practicing questions, identifying trends/trouble areas, and creating methods for solving those challenging concepts.

Algebra 1

I have tutored in Algebra for ~2 years now and understand a variety of methods for explaining the subject. As a banker, economics major, and recent MBA, I used these methods regularly in my professional and academic careers. Using existing concepts that the student has mastered will be paramount to their success with this subject.

Algebra 2

I have tutored in Algebra for ~2 years now and understand a variety of methods for explaining the subject. As a banker, economics major, and recent MBA, I used these methods regularly in my professional and academic careers. Using existing concepts that the student has mastered will be paramount to their success with this subject.

Business

I have a bachelors in Economics and a masters in Business Administration. I have over 5 years of banking experience, primarily in private wealth, but also in retail and operations management. I have worked in one of the major banking capitals of the world, New York City. I am well-read and well-versed on trends, markets, and economies.

Common Core

I have tutored Common Core students at the elementary and middle school levels. I understand the basic principles of the Common Core. The process for implementation of the Common Core is something that I am familiar with. All of my experiences with the Common Core have been in the Math discipline.

Economics

As a banker (previously on Wall Street) and Economics major from a top college, I use Economic concepts regularly in my professional career. Using examples that apply to the student's day-to-day life will best explain this social science. Discussion is at the heart of this discipline and testing will ensure mastery of this field.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have tutored in Elementary (K-6th) for ~2 years now and understand a variety of methods for explaining the subject. As a banker, economics major, and recent MBA, I used these methods regularly in my professional and academic careers. Using existing concepts that the student has mastered will be paramount to their success with this subject.

Elementary Math

I have tutored in elementary math for ~2 years now and understand a variety of methods for explaining the subject. As a banker, economics major, and recent MBA, I used these methods regularly in my professional and academic careers. Using existing concepts that the student has mastered will be paramount to their success with this subject.

English

On the ACT, English was my highest score at 29. I attended an elite liberal arts college, where writing was paramount to my success in college. People often try to complicate the language, making sentences longer than they should be. Good English is short.

Finance

As a banker (previously on Wall Street) and recent MBA, I use Financial concepts regularly in my professional career. Using examples that apply to the student's day-to-day life will best explain this subject. Discussion is at the heart of this discipline and testing will ensure mastery of this field.

GMAT

I was admitted into 80% of the schools, all of which were top 10 programs nationally, that I applied to with a 670 GMAT score. My stronger subject is Math, but I am also well versed in the Sentence Correction and Critical Reasoning categories of the Verbal. Preparing students for the test is a matter of practicing questions, identifying trends/trouble areas, and creating methods for solving those challenging concepts.

Grammar

On the ACT, English was my highest score at 29. Many of these questions are Grammar questions. I attended an elite liberal arts college, where writing was paramount to my success in college. People often try to complicate the language, making sentences longer than they should be. Good Grammar is short.

Microsoft Excel

I have used Excel in my career as a banker since 2009. I understand the basic functions and can tailor my lessons to the student's need easily. Excel is best taught by doing -- so much of the work will consists of overviews/examples of how to do things, having the student do them, and practicing these methods.

Proofreading

On the ACT, English was my highest score at 29. Many of these questions include Proofreading questions. I attended an elite liberal arts college, where writing was paramount to my success in college. Proofreading requires skill in understanding the English language, which I have mastered academically.

SAT Math

For both the ACT and GMAT, I have significantly high math scores. Given the changes to the SAT, namely the removal of penalized quessing, I can help students achieve high Math scores for this examination. Preparing students for the test is a matter of practicing questions, identifying trends/trouble areas, and creating methods for solving those challenging concepts.
