About Annie

My goal in tutoring each student is to help them reach their potential and see grades and test scores improve. I have a BS degree in Psychology and an advanced degree in Counseling. I tutored for 2 years in the areas of K-6 and literacy, working with students on phonics, letter recognition, sight words, vocabulary, reading comprehension, study skills, etc. My experience tutoring K-6 was with students within the Memphis City School System, all subjects and Literacy Mid-South tutoring students within the literacy program, some of which were learning to read for the first time. I have a passion for working with students as a tutor due to my love of books and reading beginning early in my life. I pride myself on encouraging students to take chances and expand their thinking beyond what they currently know, which can also be accomplished through the wide world of books and creative writing activities. I like to challenge students creatively as well as their academics. I also taught study skills, test taking strategies, time management, setting goals, etc., 1 year at The University of Memphis to undergraduate students.

My tutoring style is to pre-test to find the current functioning level and build on that to reach the desired level. I encourage each student to be open to the activities which are geared to facilitate learning in a fun way and introduce the material. I also introduce different learning styles, visual, auditory, kinesthetic (hands on), to see which is a good fit. My goal for each session is that each student be able to explain one new concept, idea or thought and/or successfully review words. To get started, I provide a free consultation meeting to create goals and develop a workable schedule. I try to be flexible with time, however I do have a minimum 6 hour cancellation tutor policy but can offer make up sessions. I can also travel to an agreed upon location that may be more convenient for our sessions.

I have a passion for reading, spelling and reading comprehension. Reading is the foundation for life long learning and improving this skill is essential. I love introducing new words and building a vast vocabulary that will be helpful moving forward in each grade and increasing the students reading readiness skills. I taught literacy, which included phonics, comprehension, letter recognition, sight words, etc., within an agency whose overall goal was to increase literacy.

I am an outstanding tutor because I meet students where they are academically and build their skills to the level where they can be successful. This creates a solid foundation and understanding so that each student can build on what they know and learn how to apply it in each subject area. I have experience tutoring K-6 in reading, math and study skills to students within a public school system.

I have a passion for reading and understanding phonics is essential in building our vocabulary and sight words. This increases being able to pronounce words which will increase the students reading skill. I taught literacy, which included phonics, comprehension, letter recognition, sight words, etc., within an agency whose overall goal was to increase literacy.

I look forward to hearing from you and working with your child as we journey forward!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Career Development

I have 7 years working within Higher Ed with students as a Counselor. I assisted students with taking Interest and Personality Inventories to help them narrow down a more suitable career path. I worked with them on choosing majors, finding out areas of strengths in regards to academic subjects needed for all majors. I paired them with Mentors in areas of interest to get a behind the scene look at chosen careers. I also prepared them with mock interviews, resume assistance, internship / volunteer opportunities and appropriate work attire workshops, etc.

College Counseling

I have 7 years experience working as a college Counselor at a Community college, University and a community agency program working with at risk students. My experience includes all areas of need for each student. Those areas may be personal counseling, including mental health issues and family issues, tutoring, registering for classes, choosing majors, applying for financial aid, transitioning from high school to college life, studying routines, adjusting to college life, etc. I have a M.S. in Counseling.

Study Skills

I have taught college level and K-12 study skills. I teach students how to figure out their learning style. This will help with organizing notes, study materials, and other learning aids. I help students develop organization and an approach on what areas need the most work and we prioritize that list. I help students learn about concentration and memory and how that helps them with their study routine and test taking. I help students with time management and teach basis strategies on test taking, study time limits, etc. We work together to develop a plan that will work for them which we review in the beginning session and update as they grow and develop.

Annie is fantastic! — Annie is friendly and patient. My daughter feels very comfortable with her and looks forward to their sessions. She has taught her some invaluable organizational and time management skills already in just 2 sessions. She also takes the time to go over her classwork and homework to make sure my daughter really understands the material. I would recommend Annie to anyone who is looking for some help ...
