I have 6 years of experience both teaching and tutoring at the college level. During my time working with students, I was surprised by how many said the same thing: they once didn't mind reading and writing, but years of monotonous classes in middle school and high school made them hate it. I genuinely believe nobody actually *hates* reading and writing, they just have bad experiences with it. I focus on providing a positive atmosphere and encouraging honest engagement with reading and writing material, so that it doesn't feel like a chore but rather an opportunity for personal expression. One of the things I'm most proud of as a teacher and tutor is how many of my students have managed to find something about writing they enjoy, or a book they realize they actually like reading.
My goal as a tutor is not only to get my students to succeed with a specific assignment or class, but to actually come away with techniques they can use throughout their academic and professional careers--even their personal lives! To accomplish this, I stay away from theory and focus on practice and applicability. Everything I teach is something that you can see working on the page immediately. I'm not going to bore you with the history of the English language or literary theory; rather, I'm going so show you easy to understand strategies that you can quickly learn and effectively apply to your writing to improve its clarity and coherency.
I have a B.A. in English, an M.F.A. in Creative Writing with an emphasis in fiction, and a PhD. in English with an emphasis in fiction. Since 2015, I have been continuously employed by universities as an instructor of English Composition and Creative Writing. During this time I have taught and tutored more than 500 college students, often one-on-one. Most of my students have been freshman and sophomores, but I've also had plenty of advanced high schoolers and adult learners as well.
