I’ve tutored humanities, STEM, and test-prep for people of all ages and from all different educational backgrounds, each of whom was pushing to their own personal edge. I’ve tutored humanities, STEM, and test-prep for people of all ages and from all different educational backgrounds, each of whom was pushing to their own personal edge. My goal is to provide whatever guidance and support you need to achieve your goals, as well as the encouragement that we all need when tackling something new and difficult.

I have degrees in both humanities and STEM fields, 99th percentile scores on the SAT and ACT, and over a decade of experience teaching college Physics. I began tutoring mathematics and writing in the mid 90s while pursuing my bachelor's degree in history. I later returned to school for an MS in Physics and then a PhD in Computational Physics, during which time I taught physics courses and mentored undergraduates. I’ve since taught physics at several colleges, but have realized I prefer one-on-one instruction and a focus on academic fundamentals.

I currently tutor all sections of the ACT and SAT tests, and have worked with clients to prepare for various state-specific tests. I also tutor all mathematics through the high school level.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you’re interested in tutoring or just have questions about the process. I look forward to hearing from you!

A note about lesson scheduling:
If you need to cancel or reschedule a lesson, please do so at least 24 hours before the scheduled lesson time. When a student doesn’t show up for a lesson at the scheduled time, I remain online for the first 10 minutes, after which time the lesson is canceled, and the student is billed for only that 10 minutes. Cancellation/rescheduling of a lesson with less than 24 hours notice is treated the same as a “no-show”.

Years of graduate school and teaching have led me to an unexpected appreciation for the basics of mathematics, and a love for helping people find their own understanding of those basics. Everyone’s learning path is different, and I will work with you or your child in whatever way is needed to find those next steps toward understanding. I’m happy to work with students of all ages and needs. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions about tutoring, or would like to schedule a lesson.

English

ACT English,

ACT English

Guidance and practice can improve your ACT scores! I’ve been through the process myself, having trained my way up to 99th percentile scores on all sections of both the SAT and ACT tests. I tutor the ACT English section (as well as the rest of the test) using a straight-forward method that sticks close to the official practice tests issued by the test’s creators. I work with students to ensure that for each test question they understand: a) the “standard” way to find the correct answer, b) any ACT-style shortcuts to find the answer faster, c) strategies for guessing in case one cannot find the correct answer, and d) the general principles tested by the question. In this way we build familiarity with the test, and fill in any gaps of understanding as we go. Along the way, we also learn how to approach the test as a whole: general strategies for avoiding mistakes, time management, mindset, expectations, etc. I enjoy what I do, and I try to make the process enjoyable for my students as well. Please let me know if you have any questions about the process, or would like to schedule a lesson.

Every student walks their own path to an understanding of algebra. While teaching physics, I routinely encountered students who, despite having passed an algebra class, still needed to go back and talk through the basics until they got what they needed, and got it in their own way. It was there I understood what patience and individual attention can accomplish. I’ve been teaching and tutoring for over 20 years, and I enjoy what I do. I will work with you (or your child) to keep you encouraged and moving toward the particular insights you need to succeed in your Algebra I class.

Knowledgeable and Engaging

My son is a junior preparing for the math portion of his SAT exam. He has had a few lessons with Brad . My son and I have both found Brad to be engaging and great at probing him for understanding how he arrived at answers. Brad is also phenomenal at providing and explaining helpful strategies. I have been amazed by how my son does not complain about having lessons with Brad and how his confidence is building as they tackle questions/skills.

Elka, 4 lessons with Brad
Tutor responded:

I'm so glad to hear our sessions are helping! V. is working very hard and overcoming real challenges...it's inspiring to watch. It's my pleasure to help in whatever way I can!

Very informative session

My daughter had a great session with Mr. Brad. He was able to give her some insight in taking the test.

:) It was my pleasure to work with J. as he prepared for the SAT. He's a very intelligent young man; more importantly, he has a genuine love for learning and a keen interest in the subjects he's studying. He's on his way to very exciting things...I'm happy to have played some small part along his journey!

knowledgeable and fun

Brad is very knowledgeable with math and made my daughter feel comfortable right from the beginning. She has been tutored before, but said he is fun and knowledgeable and a great teacher!

Denise , 10 lessons with Brad
Tutor responded:

Ha! Well the fun was mutual, I assure you! G. has a quick mind and an extraordinary sense of humor...I never thought I'd find myself laughing so hard over talk of tangents and quadratic equations. Those gifts will allow her to help people in really substantial ways as she goes forward; it's my privilege to be playing some small part in her journey!

Knowledgeable and very helpful

Brad was very helpful with the SAT review and made it easier for me to understand. I do recommend Brad for other students who is having trouble breaking down questions on math problems.

Patient, easy-going tutor

Brad did a great job making my daughter comfortable. For a student who has text anxiety, he did a great job of encouraging her and guiding her through the expectations of the ACT.

Jennifer, 4 lessons with Brad
Tutor responded:

I'm so glad to hear it! The ACT is disorienting for most people at first; half the game is just building familiarity with the test. As this happens, J. will be better able to apply that amazing mind of hers to each question. I think we're going to see a quite a change as we go!

Excellent tutor

My son has had two sessions with Brad . He enjoyed them and found them to be very helpful. Scheduling was very easy and I was given feedback each time. We plan on continuing with Brad to prepare for the ACT exam.
