About Luke

Hello,

My name is Luke. I am a Japanese, Java, and EFL / ESL tutor. My teaching method is centered on quickly building a solid and thorough foundation, and then providing students with not only the knowledge, but the tools, resources, and perspective to improve on their own. I am good at working closely with students to assess their individual needs and understanding of the subject matter, and catering lessons or practices to address those needs. My tutoring is practice-centric, and prospective students can expect to spend a lot of time practicing conjugations, conversing, or writing programs.

In my personal life, I have many hobbies and pursuits, and enjoy learning a wide variety of things. I am a Language Learner, a Martial Artist, a Programmer, an aspiring Indie Game Developer, a Craftsman, and a fairly well versed Cook, among other things! My proficiency certainly varies among my pursuits, and I certainly have more interests than I have proficient skills, but I would like to think that I have learned a lot about the process of learning itself as a result.

If you are interested in taking lessons with me, I am humble, patient, and accommodating. Let me know your level of proficiency, and your goals, and we can come up with a game plan to help you on your way to fluency!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

In college, I tutored foreign students at the University of South Alabama's ESL department. I also have ESL tutoring experience with Catholic Refugee Services, and with personal friends and acquaintances at the University. Moreover, I have a background in English and Sociology, and am an experienced language learner myself.

Japanese

I have eight years experience learning and using Japanese. At the University of South Alabama, I completed two Intermediate Japanese classes in 2008, but am primarily self-taught. I speak, read, and write Japanese on a daily basis and am well acquainted with the culture as well as the language.

Java

I am familiar with a broad number of programming languages, but am most competent and experienced in Java. There's not much to say of my qualifications as I am primarily self-taught. However, I can provide examples of my work.
