I am a retired attorney. While a student in law school, I outlined many of my courses and sold the outlines to other students; I also taught classes to other students while we were all studying for exams. I was at the top of my class in law school and was Editor in Chief of the Loyola Law Review.
In my law practice, I was a heavy user of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Publisher. I also wrote programs in Visual Basic to run my law office. I could still practice law, but I let my office and staff go to retire, and I would rather enjoy life.
Tutoring is something I really enjoy and am good at. I am a retired attorney. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
My desktop publishing experience has been mainly acquired while using Microsoft Publisher. But I have, and am very familiar with, the Adobe CS5-6 suite of programs used for desktop publishing.
I have used Excel in my law practice for over 15 years (maybe 20, but can't recall exactly). I have written numerous macros in Excel to perform various tasks. I have used Visual Basic to write programs to start Excel programmatically and then issue directions to Excel to perform various tasks. I have created numerous templates in Excel to help with various law office tasks, such as computing legal fees, preparing client billing statements, computing the amount of damages sought or wages lost in connection with lawsuits. I even wrote a spreadsheet to demonstrate violations of the wage & hour law by a defendant I had sued, and used a blow-up of the spreadsheet in my opening statements, which resulted in a settlement during the trial.
I have used PowerPoint to assist me in several legal cases I handled. One of the presentations I prepared demonstrated the facts of an accident in which a garbage truck fell over, killing two people. Another presentation I prepared demonstrated graphically the legal malpractice of other attorneys who had previously represented my client. I have studied the "effects" and "animations" capabilities of PowerPoint and have read several textbooks about those and about PowerPoint in general.
I have used Publisher to create two booklets (lettersize: 8.5 x 11), of about 20-30 pages each, for the Gulf Coast Koi Society (for their 2011 and 2012 Pond Tours), incorporating photographs of the members' Koi ponds, with descriptions of same, and maps and directions for each one. The book also contained numerous advertisements, which I adapted from materials furnished by those who purchased ads in the book, or created on my own. About 600 copies of each booklet were printed in color, then were spirally bound and given or sold to those taking the tours. I've been asked to share that work with the national Koi society, for use by other groups.
I was one of the first lawyers to use "Magic Wand" (an early word processing program), and later "New Word" (created by programmers who left Word Perfect to create their own word processing program), then Word Perfect, and finally, Microsoft Word. I have used Word exclusively in my law practice for the last 15-20 years. I have created numerous macros using Word's "VBA" coding language (similar to Visual Basic) to perform various Word tasks. I have used Visual Basic itself to write programs to "tell Word what to do". I have written a complete programming system to run Word in special unique ways for my sister's medical transcription service, where Word is run on a server (using Microsoft Server). Long ago I stopped dictating jobs for my legal secretaries to type, and did the typing myself, using Word exclusively. I believe I am a "world class" Word expert.
I have used Visual Basic 6.0, and later Visual Basic.Net on numerous occasions to automate tasks in my law office or for personal use at home. I created a program to teach the the "times tables" for which a number of elementary schools paid me $100 each for site licenses to use the program at their schools. I created a complete programming system to run my law office, which included managing Word and Excel, and database files for "contacts" in my law cases. Initially I created the databases using Microsoft Access, but later incorporated the code to create them in separate VB6 programs. I used the system (which included over 25 separate programs written in VB6) to run my law office for over 15 (maybe 20, can't recall exactly) years. I am presently converting those VB6 programs into VB.NET.
