About Jessica

Hello! My name is Jessica E. I am a certified teacher, and Summa Cum Laude alumni of Mississippi College. I am certified in all subjects through 6th grade, as well as English in grades K-12, Math K-8, and Reading K-12.

I have over 6 years experience tutoring and teaching students of all ability levels. I use simple, proven, and personalized methods to help students grow confidence and achieve success in the classroom and for tests.

Before developing a tutoring plan, I will want to have a brief, free, analysis meeting to look through your my students' school textbooks, view some examples of their schoolwork, and discuss their needs. I would also like to spend some time talking to my student to get to know them, their interests, and their abilities, so I can tailor their lessons.

I look forward to helping new students grow their confidence and success!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have had the joy to teach students of all ability levels, and have experience in helping all of them to experience success on standardized tests. I have specific experience in the area of helping students to work faster, more efficiently, and to understand and decode questions using simple test taking strategies for reading and writing. Personally, I took Honors English classes through high school and college, scored a 35 on the English portion of my ACT, and received a English k-12 teaching certificate with an award of Excellence. I am confident in my ability to not only teach ACT English well, but provide great resources to my tutoring students.

ACT Reading

Reading is something i have always enjoyed, and I enjoy sharing it with my students even more. I took advanced literature all throughout high school, and eventually scored a 35 on the English/Reading portion of the ACT. Furthermore, I have a teacher's license in Remedial Reading, and experience as a public school teacher of students of all skill levels. I have worked with advanced students to challenge them and enable them to push their scores up even higher on standardized tests, and I have worked with remedial students to build up core skills and positive test taking strategies to enable them to have success. I look forward to helping tutor future students to success with these skills!

ACT Science

The ACT Science portion can be very daunting and confusing to some. There are several simple test-taking skills and strategies which I believe are essential to passing the Science test, and this is what I share with my students. I have had great success in helping students to overcome that (very understandable!) fear of the ACT Science test by breaking it down and giving them test taking skills to understand it. I welcome the opportunity to future students!

Algebra 1

Algebra 1 is by far my favorite course in Mathematics. I have a teacher's license in teaching Mathematics, as well as several years experience in teaching and tutoring Common Core math. I welcome future opportunities to continue tutoring in Algebra, since I can share not only knowledge and experience with the subject, but also empathy for frustrated students. My goal is to help them work towards a better understanding and appreciation of Mathematics.

American History

I believe that American History is one of the most important things we can study as Americans. I believe that the best way to help a student understand history is by showing the information to then as a relevant, interesting, and interwoven story that still affects our lives today. It has been my joy to do this for my students in the public schools, and I look forward to the opportunity to help future students grasp American History for themselves.

I love tutoring Biology and helping students to better understand the science of life! As an experienced and licensed teacher, I work with my students to focus on interactive methods of discovery, and personalized study methods.

Elementary Math

I have several years of experience teaching Common Core Mathematics to Elementary grades, and tutoring them to achieve success using the new Common Core methods. As a licensed teacher, I have helped many of my students who struggled for years with math to be able to succeed both in school and on standardized tests. I enjoy working with my students using a variety of foundational drills, fun and interactive games and study tricks. and LOTS of personalized practice!

Microsoft Word

Throughout my years as both a student and a professional, I have had daily experience with Microsoft Word. Microsoft Word is an essential tool for communicating and creating professional documents today. I am glad to have the chance to help people learn how to make the most of this tool for their own use.

As an experienced math teacher and tutor with a license in Mathematics, I have much to offer to my students. I have experience teaching and tutoring Common Core, and helping students to build up their skills and understanding. In addition to multiple years of immersion style Spanish lessons at a college level, I have had the opportunity to visit Spanish speaking countries 3 times. I have a wonderful appreciation for the language, as well as an understanding of the culture and the way native Spanish speakers use their language.

Study Skills

As an experienced teacher in the public schools, I tutored my own students during study hall or after school on a weekly basis. I helped them to work on vocabulary in a variety of subjects, note taking skills, summarization skills, and how to suit their studying habits to their unique learning styles. Over the years, the students who take my advice to heart once they get home, have experienced improved understanding and improved test scores.

Writing, in both its creative and informational forms, has long been one of my favorite pastimes. Throughout my education, I have taken (and excelled in) advanced Writing, English, and Language Arts courses. I also love proof-reading and editing (something many friends have benefited from!). I am currently a pre-service Elementary Teacher at Mississippi College. In December 2012, I will receive my certification in English, Math, and Social Studies. I love writing, and would love to help others enjoy it and succeed in it.
