About Sonya

Helping others 'discover their potential' has been my passion for many years. Years ago I became a volunteer in my children's classroom(s) assisting students with their basic skills. This experience led to a desire to assist others of all ages to improve in their educational skills. For twenty plus years I worked as the director and vice president of a post-secondary college environment where the mission of the institutions was to aid students/graduates in finding training-related jobs. This, of course, required that they actually 'know' the subject matter being taught, and not just complete it. This was one of the most rewarding, yet challenging, periods of my career - working with the student to ensure that they didn't just pass the subject, but they actually understood the subject. It was wonderful to attend graduation ceremonies and see the smiles of success on so many faces! Of course all of this didn't come about by chance - developing and upgrading curriculum to ensure it met the students needs was an ongoing process. During this time I was very involved in developing an online program that helped the working student to obtain his education remotely - what a wonderful tool is the internet!

After semi-retiring, while pursuing a master of education degree in workforce education (online), it was my pleasure to work as a consultant with persons who needed career skill-building in the non-profit arena. I worked one-on-one with them, taught a career skills class and assisted them in finding employment in areas in which they were competent.

Currently, I have been acting as a substitute teacher in grades K-12 (and special needs and gifted classes as well). We never stop learning - but sometimes we need just a little boost to help us comprehend and succeed.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

Tutoring students of all ages has been very rewarding for me over the past 30+ years. First, my own children-working in their classrooms as a parent teacher aide to help little ones with reading; with young adults in the business college environment; and for the past two years as a substitute teacher in the public school system.
I really enjoy working with the K-6th students, including special Ed. This experience coupled with my Masters Degree in Education should help me be an effective tutor.

GED

I have worked with adults in the postsecondary field for many years.

Praxis

I have worked with adults in the post secondary field for many years - as a manager primarily, but also as a trainer, mentor and tutor. As Vice President of a corporation that owned and managed several business colleges, it was my responsibility to ensure that faculty (both in-house and online) were qualified to teach in a variety of subject areas. Oftentimes, this meant that I conducted training sessions and workshops to assist them in this process.

Currently, I am substitute teaching in the K-12 area. With my background of working with instructors and assisting them in achieving their potential, I believe that I would be an effective tutor for those attempting the Praxis.

Reading

When my own children were in school I volunteered as a parent aid to assist students who needed a little more one-on-one with reading skills. (Many of these students were trying to master the English language as well). In my professional life I managed some small business colleges and assisted adults in improving their reading skills so they could gain admission into the programs. Currently I substitute teach in the public school (K-12) and particularly enjoy working with students on their reading skills.

Study Skills

The importance of good study habits cannot be overemphasized. Many students are capable of completing a task or subject, but may not know how to begin. A large part of my past experience has been to help student's "break it down" so to speak, into achievable pieces. I have also developed and conducted workshops on how to have good study habits.
