During my undergraduate career I conducted research in the fields of neuroscience, ecology, and biology to earn my Bachelor of Science in Biology with a minor in Neuroscience. I began my graduate career shortly after and earned my Master of Science in Biology conducting behavioral research on cockroaches while simultaneously teaching undergraduate health profession track cadaver-based Anatomy & Physiology. I then became an instructor at both the high school and collegiate level for Anatomy & Physiology for students with goals for careers in medicine and healthcare. I am now teaching pre-clerkship Anatomy, Neuroanatomy, and Histology to medical and dental students as I work toward my PhD in Clinical Anatomy.

My teaching approach stems from a etiology of Constructivist Learning Theory in which learning occurs when students create meaning from the material presented. I do this by emphasizing the importance in understanding why the wrong answer will not work, to better and more easily understand why the right answer will work. This is in contrast to immediately discussing the correct answer without reviewing other options. I often use various media to assist students in their understanding such as figures or diagrams, songs, mnemonics, and even silly anecdotes to remember those hard but critical details. My teaching sessions are conversational to ensure student engagement with the material. I also will often assign short quizzes to assess the student's progress.

Knowledgeable

Kayla saved the day! It was our first time having her as my daughters tutor. Kayla was knowledgeable on the subject and responded quickly to my messages. She made herself available last minute and helped revise my daughter’s Cell paper. We will definitely use Kayla tutoring services again.

Highly skilled and patient tutor!!

I had three entomology lessons with Kayla, and she was so patient! Although I came in really struggling to understand phylogenetic trees, she walked me through it so that I could understand it for myself. Highly recommended for anyone who needs extra brush-up with science!

Very prepared and Knowledgeable! AMAZING TUTOR!

Kayla was very prepared to teach my 10th-grade son. Due to Covid, my son didn't get much instruction from his AP Bio teacher from school and was worried about the AP exam. Kayla was very organized and knowledgeable. Also, she was very understanding. My son just had his first session and he will continue to work with Kayla to prepare for his AP Bio exam. I highly recommend Kayla!!

Great Experience

Kayla has helped my daughter twice now with Honors Biology. She has given my daughter confidence and clarity that she has yet to have this school year. We will call on her many more times I’m sure. I would highly recommend Kayla.
