Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have worked with children with ADD/ADHD for 11 years as a Special Education Teacher. Helping students focus is very important in learning and I try to make the learning fun to keep their attention.

Aspergers

I have a degree in Special Education and have worked with several students with Aspergers. My experience has shown that generally speaking they want to learn and do well in a tutoring environment.

Autism

I have a degree in Special Education and have worked with several Autistic students along the way. Flexibility is key because they are all different and you have to find what works for them.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have taught special education for 11 years. Six in k-5 and five in 6-8th. I can teach reading, comprehension, spelling, basic math.

Handwriting

Handwriting is neglected in schools today and should not be. I have taught handwriting with my special needs students. I have materials available to use with my tutoring students.

Homeschool

Homeschooling families sometimes need support from a certified teacher. I can lend support by teaching specifics aspects of reading that students are struggling with.

Phonics

I am trained in Orton-Gillingham and in Hill Methodology which both work on phonemic awareness and phonics. I was a mentor in my previous distinct; teaching peers to use the methodology.

Special Needs

I have worked with all kinds of special needs students over the years; from medically fragile to mild learning disabilities.

Study Skills

Study skills are important to all students and ned to be taught. I am qualified to teach study skills because my students with ADHD and learning disabilities needed specialized instruction.
