About Carva

Are you looking to prepare yourself or your child for success in school, college, and/or a career? Then I may be just the person you need! I am in my 17th year as a certified teacher with grade level experience from kindergarten to college, as well as career-focused work with adult learners!

My educational background includes bachelor's and master's degrees in English/secondary education, as well as post-master's degree work in instructional leadership/education administration. My first nine years of teaching focused upon the teaching of English/language arts for 6th-12th graders. I have a passion and enthusiasm to help children, teens, and adult learners succeed in numerous areas, including but not limited to English, reading, grammar, and writing. My love for reading once led me to spend some time as an elementary school librarian working with PreK-5th graders. Story time was my favorite time!

I am a former Teacher Consultant for an affiliate of the National Writing Project and have trained 100's of other educators in the use of English-language arts literacy strategies. I am a member of the International Literacy Association, the Mississippi Reading Association, the National Council for Teachers of English, and the Association of Career Technical Educators.

This is my 8th year as an specialized educator within high school Career Technical Education (CTE) , where I work with a diverse population of students to ensure their academic success while enrolled in vocational/technical courses. I serve students in developing and applying reading, writing, and math skills that carry over from the academic classroom into their chosen career paths.

I have a particular interest in college and career preparation, including test prep for the GED, ACT, SAT, ASVAB, and PRAXIS. Do you need help taking the next steps to finish high school, get into college, get the scholarship you want, join the military, or become a teacher yourself? I have you covered! I can do overview strategy sessions for each of these tests, as well as in-depth sessions for specific subject areas within the tests.

My experience in CTE has also led me to obtain numerous technology certifications, including the designation as a Certified Online Instructor. I'm currently working on my Google for Educators Level 1 certification. Let me help you - whether it's right here at the local library or halfway across the country via Wyzant's online platform!

Are you ready to get your first job or to start a new career? I also enjoy working with students of all ages to prepare for employment by offering resume' writing and job interview coaching. I can even conduct mock job interviews with you and provide you with immediate feedback. Need to know how to fill out that college application or write that scholarship essay? Look no further!

Does time management or test anxiety create problems for you in school? Let me help with proven strategies, study skills, and test-taking skills. I love to teach students HOW to learn in ways that can be applied to any subject area. We can explore your learning styles and develop the exact strategies that work best for you!

Need help with advanced writing skills now that you're in college and taking more difficult classes? Maybe you just need someone to proofread and make suggestions once you've finished writing that big paper? Then you need me! I am a self-proclaimed "grammar nerd" and actually love to proofread!

Contact me today to schedule a private tutoring/coaching session! I am an certified professional educator with almost two decades of experience, and I'm ready to help you succeed!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ASVAB

I have numerous years of test prep experience, primarily with high school students. However. I have worked with adult learners as well.

Bible Studies

I have numerous years of experience in Christian children's and youth ministry, through volunteer roles as well as serving on-staff at two churches as the Director of Youth Ministries. I have led Children's Church, confirmation classes, Sunday School for children and teens, Vacation Bible School, and worked with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Career Development

I am in my 8th year as a Student Services Coordinator working with high school vocational/career-technical students. I've had the privilege of serving in this role at three different Career Technology Centers. Some of my many responsibilities include administering personality, aptitude, learning styles, and career interest assessments. I then create plans that assist our instructors in leading students through college and career exploration and research, field experience in possible career areas. One of my roles is to ensure that students enrolled in career-technical courses also have the academic and employability skills needed to pursue post-secondary education, the military, and/or a career immediately following high school. I have a great deal of experience leading students through resume' writing, cover letter/thank you letter writing, appropriate email etiquette, filling out job applications, and preparing for job interviews - specifically by conducting mock job interviews then providing constructive feedback.

College Counseling

One of my current job responsibilities includes coordinating services for students in preparation for post-secondary education. I help the students to develop a transition plan from high school to college, exploring factors that will help them choose majors and colleges. Students research costs, admissions requirements, and scholarship opportunities as needed, and I often refer them to our high school College & Career Center, as well as our high school Guidance Counselors. I've worked at length with students who are writing their admissions and scholarship essays, helped prepare students for ACT/SAT/ASVAB, conducted mock scholarship interviews with students, written countless recommendation letters, and served for several years on the committee selecting the recipients of Mississippi State University's most prestigious scholarship.

Cooking

I am something of an "organization junkie" and those skills have adapted themselves over the last 20 years into my ability to share with others fast, budget-friendly, easy meal planning and prep ideas that provide alternatives to fast food for busy families. For several years, I maintained a blog where I shared recipes, menus, shopping guides, and kitchen/pantry organization, among many other related topics. My cooking ideas range from freezer meals, crockpot meals, to one-dish skillet meals and casseroles.

Desktop Publishing

I have used desktop publishing software and applications throughout the majority of my teaching career. I develop parent and school newsletters, recruiting brochures for our career-technical course offerings, business cards, postcards, and other similar products regularly. I prepare academic writing in appropriate formats and often instruct students in the day-to-day uses of various forms of desktop publishing. I have nationally-recognized IC3 technology certification (Internet and Core Computing Certification) which required me to demonstrate use of Microsoft Office applications in addition to other skills. I also have a state-recognized C.O.O.L. (Certificate of Online Learning) technology certification which qualifies me as an online instructor. I am currently pursuing Google for Educators Level 1 certification. I try to stay current on the latest trends in web-based desktop publishing, for example the use of Prezi.com rather than just traditional use of PowerPoint.

Microsoft Publisher

I have used Microsoft Publisher (as well as other Microsoft Office applications) throughout the majority of my teaching career. Publisher, in particular, is a program I use on almost a daily basis. I can provide examples of the types of newsletters and brochures I have created over the years. I develop parent and school newsletters, recruiting brochures for our career-technical course offerings, business cards, postcards, and other similar products regularly. I often instruct students in how to use Publisher to improve projects for their high school classes.

Praxis

I have both a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in education. I also have post-master's coursework in education. The Praxis series determines whether a teacher can earn a teaching license. Education majors must currently pass all three core general knowledge Praxis tests as well as the Praxis tests in their content areas to earn certifications. I have four Mississippi AA teacher certifications, and I'm currently preparing for my fifth certification, which will require an additional Praxis subject area test. I am well-versed in format and preparations needed for these tests.

Public Speaking

I have spent 17 years in front of a classroom teaching. In my early years of my career, I also became a writing teacher-consultant, leading school and district staff development. Many civic and community responsibilities also gave me significant experience in effective public speaking. Since 2011, I have been a professional development trainer for the Mississippi Department of Education and a lead presenter at the MS Association of Career Technical Educators yearly state conference. I have conducted dozens of workshops, leading crowds in numbers anywhere from very small groups in a classroom to over 200 educators in a ballroom setting. I continually receive positive audience feedback from my public speaking engagements.

Special Needs

One of my teacher certifications is Vocational Special Populations, which certifies me to work with five federally-defined groups of high school students enrolled in vocational/career-technical programs: students with disabilities, students who speak and read English as a second language (ESL), economically-disadvantaged students, teen parents/pregnant teens, and non-traditional students (for example, female students enrolled in traditionally male-dominated fields). I am currently pursuing my teaching licensure for special education - mild to moderate disabilities.
