Greetings,

I am a music instructor and master's degree student at Missouri State University, where I teach music theory classes and piano lessons. Before beginning my master's degree at MSU, I taught piano, guitar, and music theory in private lessons and in music shops for seven years. I worked with a wide range of students on technique, music-reading, improvisation, song-writing, and interpretation in all kinds of genres. In my free time, I wrote songs, fronted a blues trio, and played various other concerts in the area. Nowadays, I use my home studio to produce my own songs, which generally infuse pop, blues, RnB, jazz, indie, and folk.

As a pianist, I have played classical recitals and won three top prizes in state-wide piano competitions--MMTA (2017), MFMC (2019), and MMTA (2019). I have accompanied singers, instrumentalists, churches, bands, choirs, and myself. Piano began for me as joyful tinkering, though, and it still is, as improvisation plays a big part in my practice and performance. I earned my bachelors in piano in 2020, and I am now working at MSU while I pursue my masters.

As a teacher, I believe in meeting students where they are to help them accomplish their own goals. I know how important it is for our music to be our own, and I know how frustrating it is to be forced into a mold. Certain basic principles are helpful for everyone, but lessons should be fun; they should be an extension of what the student likes about music.

Whether you want to learn an instrument, a single song, or music theory, music is music. The position of student and teacher are sacred, and when handled correctly, they can produce lifelong results.

Feel free to contact me for a free consultation or with any questions!

Piano

Piano

I began playing piano by ear when I was seven. Since then, I have won three state-wide piano competitions (named in my bio), taught numerous students, performed recitals, and composed and improvised more original material than could ever be recollected. I have years of experience accompanying church, singers, instrumentalists,, and studying how what I have learned from classical music can be applied to other genres. Piano is my foremost quality.

Music

Ear Training,

Ear Training

I teach two music theory sections per semester at MSU. In my classes, ear-training makes up about 40-50% of the in-class curriculum. We meet for over three hours each week to work on melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic dictations, as well as specialized exercises aimed at fostering a comprehensive aural ability.
Music Theory,

Music Theory

Music Theory has opened up colorful doors for my piano playing and improvisation. I use it to compose, think, communicate, and, of course, teach. Before teaching Music Theory at MSU, I taught private students and tutored my colleagues and classmates for years. Music Theory is an elegant, exciting tool, and it need not be complicated.

Sight Singing

Sight Singing

Not only do I have experience teaching Sight-Singing to college freshman theory students, I am an accomplished singer in my own right. While my main instrument is piano, with which I have gained prizes and a degree, I have sung with bands and taken voice lessons for 4 years. I am well versed in singing technique as well as music theory, which, when combined with my piano skills and teaching experience, make for extremely sophisticated sight-singing instruction.
