About Monica

I have always loved teaching. As a gymnastics teacher at the YMCA in my hometown, my favorite part of teaching was watching the young kids have the sudden "lightbulb" moment and accompanying improvement. As I began tutoring middle school children as a part of my National Honor Society requirements, I realized that I enjoy teaching from an academic standpoint as well. I also began tutoring Honors and A.P. Chemistry students during my senior year of high school.
The thing that makes me a good tutor is that I can offer a new perspective to students. Often, the problem that my students encounter is that the teacher (or professor) puts everything into "technical terms," and the student becomes overwhelmed. I have a much more down-to-earth teaching style that focuses on the basics before the overwhelming technical terms come into play. For example, my independent experiment in A.P. Chemistry, "The Effect of Vapor Pressure on Closed-End Air Column Resonance in Volumetric and Erlenmeyer Flasks," can make me sound like a mad scientist upon reading; that's why I renamed it "The Flask Symphony." I believe intimidating titles and confusing textbooks, NOT the inability to learn, are what stifles people in their academic lives.

I took A.P. Chemistry during my junior year of high school (Earning an A in the class and a 5 on the A.P. Exam) and served as a teacher's assistant to the lovely Mrs. Bannon during my senior year. I made solutions for the current A.P. lab experiments and helped her grade papers. I am currently a student in organic chemistry I at Missouri State University and I love talking about nomenclature!

I am a fluent Spanish speaker. I travelled to Ecuador on a study abroad program for six weeks over the summer and was required to speak Spanish for at least eight hours every day. This was an extreme vocabulary booster as well as an opportunity to refine the composition skills I had previously begun to develop in college. I've also taken four years of high school Spanish (wherein I learned most, if not all, of the grammatical principles of Spanish).

I have always had a strong linguistic mind. As the youngest child of my family, it was a source of amusement for us all that I was the "editor in chief" of my older brothers' essays. This began when I was young, but it culminated when I reached high school and my brothers both went to college. The editing became much more extensive, along with my knowledge of the English language, and all credit for it belongs to one of my teachers. As a freshman, I had the A.P. teacher for a simple Honors English class. The result was an extremely intense study of every grammatical rule I could ever imagine (the other freshmen did not seem to go through the same exertions, and at times that frustrated me). In that class, we went through the "ACT problem of the day" as a group and explained why each choice was correct or incorrect. That's where I learned that every ACT answer can be grammatically correct, but the question always aims for the most concise version, and that's how I got a 31 on my ACT.

I'm very willing to work with your schedule and I look forward to hearing from you about your tutoring needs!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have tutored other MSU students in calculus and another Wyzant student in geometry with outstanding results. I’m certified through Wyzant to teach algebra and have not had any clients yet, but generally my goal is to be such a good tutor that my students are equipped with the tools they need on their own and therefore outgrow my services. I will offer everything that’s available to me to get the job done efficiently so the student and I can both move forward.

Physiology

I am a pre-veterinary student with 200+ hours of shadowing experience. Last spring, I took AGS 301, Missouri State University's Farm Animal Physiology class. I achieved the highest grade in the ~100 student class and have been requested as a T.A. for the upcoming spring semester.

Spanish

I speak fluent Spanish and took four years of classes in high school, so I'm familiar with the curriculum in general for high school Spanish classes.
