About Paul

Hello, my name is Paul. I am excited about the learning process and I enjoy helping students learn. I graduated from Missouri State University with a B. A. in English, and then attended the University of Southern California, where I received a Masters in Librarianship. I returned to Springfield to become a faculty member and librarian at Drury University where I taught formal courses in using the library for research and also worked with individual students and faculty at the reference desk to find information or learn knowledge about their topics of interest. I moved from academia to the public library in Springfield where I worked for twenty-eight years. Much of my work at the library involved one-on-one work with the public to find information, learn how to use library resources, and do research. I also taught a number of training classes for library staff locally, regionally, and statewide.

My approach with each student is based on his or her individual needs, skills, and abilities. There are four basic learning styles: visual, auditory, tactile, and kinesthetic (learning by being actively involved or while moving). Which one best describes you? By getting to know which modality works best for you, I can focus on methods that will help you the most. It’s important that the learning process be enjoyable for you and that you feel a sense of accomplishment as we move through lessons. My motto is to “set yourself up for success.” What I mean is that each lesson should challenge you and yet at the same time allow you to experience a sense of making progress on the topic and learning how to be more independent and capable as a student.

Environment and outside stimuli can profoundly affect your ability as a learner to incorporate new knowledge and be able to use it in test-taking situations and everyday life. In working with you, I help you discover what kind of setting works best for you so that you can independently set up an environment that will support your own unique style of learning. My goal is to help you understand your strengths and weaknesses and learn how best to compensate for them in test-taking environments.

As a university and public librarian with over thirty years of experience, I am skilled in providing helpful tutoring geared to your needs. It is my privilege and honor to work with parents, students, and adults to help prepare you for a bright future! I enjoy seeing you succeed and having the feeling that learning is a positive, exciting part of your life. I wish you the very best and much success. It would be my pleasure to assist you in your learning process.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

In college, I was an English major and learned extensively about composition, grammar, sentence construction, vocabulary, and the art of composing clear sentences and essays. I journal on a regular basis and practice creative writing as a hobby. I have served as a proofreader and editor for a post-doctoral student who was writing a large number of papers. In my professional employment as a librarian and as a regional account manager, I was responsible for creating reports and using proper and clear English in written communication with other staff and with customers. I am a published book reviewer for Library Journal. In my home office, a collegiate dictionary is beside my computer desk and a Merriam-Webster Unabridged Dictionary of the English Language 2nd ed is within a few steps.

English

My undergraduate major was in English. My master's degree is in Librarianship.

Macintosh

I switched from Windows 7 to Mac OS X 10.6 three years ago. Along the way, I have assisted several others learn to feel comfortable in the Mac environment after having been a Windows-based computer user. I actively participate in Mac forums to increase my knowledge and keep up-to-date.

I find that some of the difficulty in switching to the Mac is not so much about Mac versus Windows but rather adjusting to a new computer and learning new avenues for accessing email, calendars, etc.

Much of the success of those who switch depends on their patience, practice, and perseverance. My role is to gently remind, review, and guide them to meet their goals.

Proofreading

I have an extensive background in writing, editing, and proofreading. My undergraduate major was in English. My graduate degree was in Librarianship (or also known as Library Studies or Library Science). I have practiced creative writing for many years and have edited two different newsletters for organizations. I am well-versed in APA style and can make sure that your citations meet the APA style. Over the past few years, I have assisted a post-doctoral student who was writing a number of papers for his studies in Analytical Psychology.

Writing

I have written and edited many extensive reports and analyses for work and have created content for and edited newsletters. In the past few years, I have worked extensively with a post-graduate student in editing their work for clarity, grammar, and formatting. My skills will help any writer improve his or her papers or reports.
