Hello to prospective new students, my name is Kathy S. I look forward to meeting you and helping you succeed in the subjects you seek to master.

I look forward to sharing my life long passion for reading, writing and public speaking with students. My hope is to share wonderful and easy-to-follow patterns that will increase your reading, writing, and speaking skills, be it for school or for personal enjoyment.

In a local R8 school system here in Southwest Missouri, I taught as a student teacher in reading classes at the middle-school level, and reading and literature at the junior high level. My spare time volunteer work included producing scripted audio sources for high school students with reading issues; I would record tutorials from textbooks on subjects such as mechanic manuals, ceramic textbooks, science and more. The program was geared to keep the student's identity private and my identity private as well. I enjoyed knowing that by listening to my recordings, these students could learn and graduate.

My background includes having taught young students, adults, and also professionally utilizing my skills over a fifteen year period in commercial radio as a newscaster and on-air announcer. Recently, I successfully tutored two students who graduated with their Masters degrees. This was in two unrelated subjects and was most enjoyable for me. I have experience with children and adults for whom English is their second language.

In most of those instances, I have been a published writer, including fiction, commercials, and technical and brochure work. My lessons are of great benefit to ambitious salespeople who want to improve their presentations, reading, writing, and delivery as well. Over the course of my own careers, I have written and presented sales presentations across 28 states and six foreign countries. I am patient, creative, and understanding of an individual's learning processes.

In addition to these areas, I offer tutoring in sewing, cooking, and flower/vegetable gardening with lessons also available in basic crochet and Irish thread crochet. I tutor in calm, safe spaces, and provide some study materials in addition to your current text books. Recently, after some time away from tutoring, I have been approved through Wyzant for Online lessons, and am very excited about this!
If you are interested in any of the crafts and other subjects, I include some of the materials required for project completion. I hope to be your tutor and look forward to meeting you.

Public Speaking

Public Speaking

In 1977 I was only 18 years old, and a college student when headhunted by two different Springfield, Missouri Radio stations for work as an on-air announcer. I became one of the youngest in the area and one of the first female drive time hosts and "DJs." I spent 13 years perfecting diction, enunciation and delivery, adding to what industry leaders and corporate employers had labeled my "natural talent." This was a wonderful time in my life, and over the years I see students and adults struggle with public speaking because they haven't built their own abilities.

I am currently enrolled at OTC in Springfield, MO in the Associate's of Applied Science degree program. My degree will be in Health Information Technology, and upon graduation I will sit for the Certified Coding Specialist certificate (I am three credit hours away from this goal) and then the State RHIT certification exam. This will be my credential in the field. I am 29 hours from this final milestone, having passed both Coding I and taking my final exam next week concluding Medical Coding II

My early tutoring work was at an elementary school, with small groups of students requiring additional attention in reading and writing. These students were in grades K-6th with a focus on grades 2 - 6. I believe this is a crucial time for children to build reading and writing skills.

I completed the test required and passed with a grade of 90%. My background includes many years writing for our local newspaper, both articles, and advertising copy; prior to that I was editor and chief writer throughout high school for the newspaper. During those years I was considered a Future Teacher's of America student teacher and assisted a sixth grade faculty member with her classes. During those years I was also President of the local chapter. Later, I was employed for over ten years in radio and television locally and also worked for an advertising agency. All these jobs required my writing on demand and for the public both in print and on broadcast.

Cooking

I have been cooking since I was in Four-H classes and competitions (9 year member) and the same in Girl Scouts (9 year member). This is aside from cooking meals, snacks, outdoor and camp-style cooking in forests, on lakes and rivers. I enjoy teaching basic recipes, including how to organize a kitchen and supplies for new cooks be they male or female, young or old. My baking skills are terrific and I enjoy all styles from Asian to outdoor techniques. I have received awards in this area as well.

Sewing

I was a member of both Four-H and Girl Scouts learning sewing basics and garment construction. We completed projects for exhibits and competitions. In my adult life I continue to create and exhibit at fairs and such when time allows. I teach sewing, basic quilting, tablecloth and curtain to name just a few. It is rewarding when a student finishes a colorful project from start to finish. My background reaches back over 30 years.
