I'm Jon, a professor of English with over 20 years of experience in the classroom. I enjoy working with students one-on-one and have helped students from a wide range of backgrounds and levels of preparation increase their reading, writing, and test skills. I have a patient, student-centered approach-- I work to develop strengths, instill confidence, and augment skills that make students self-teachers and motivated learners.

As a teacher of writing, I help students identify and express their thoughts and ideas with clarity and force. "That's what I was thinking, but you helped me make it sound much better"-- this is what many students have told me after meeting with me one-on-one at my campus office. This involves teaching a way of thinking about writing as a process of communication.

I earned a BA with Highest Honors in English and Linguistics at the University of Florida in 1999. I earned a PhD at the University of Toronto, a top 25 global university, and have taught at the University of Toronto, Notre Dame, and Missouri State University where I am a tenured professor. In addition, I was a research fellow at Dartmouth College in Hanover NH. I have taught Writing, Literature, Latin, and Linguistics. My average course evaluation score is 4.5 out of 5, and many students have commented on my friendliness and availability to provide individual help. When teaching Latin and other humanities, subjects, this student-centered approach involves coaching students to think through difficulties themselves. In this way the skills and approaches you learn from tutoring will last and can be applied new classes and challenges.

Helping my own son navigate the IB curriculum and the college application process as brought me a new range of experience that I can bring to tutoring you or your high school or college student in English, humanities (history, social studies, etc.), and Latin. I can also help with reading and writing for test prep (ACT, SAT, IB, AP).
