I have always remarked that when I stop caring, I will stop teaching, because my belief is that the teacher must believe in the student in order for the student to believe in the teacher.
I began teaching as a second career. I was offered a position to begin a program called "Guided Reading". I was hooked! I taught reading K-5 for five years before going into a classroom. Reading is my passion and my purpose. Without reading, life becomes too difficult. I have tutored several students in the past that made leaps and bounds in their reading. Recently I tutored a child where no English was spoken in the home. At Christmas he was in first grade reading on an E level (which is the start of first grade). By the end of April (two sessions a week), he was where he should be, at level J. Having said this, I am able to tutor in other elementary areas, as I am a fifth grade teacher, but Reading is my specialty. I work on Fluency Words, Phonics, Comprehension and Fluency in Reading.
If I am lucky enough to meet you and your student, I will not charge you for our first 30 minute meeting. If I am then chosen to tutor for you and your student I would please ask that if something arises that you cancel within two hours of our session. I also would prefer to tutor at a library or other quiet public place (at least until we know each other fully).
I look forward to meeting you and your student and cannot wait to make a difference in your student's Reading Level! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
First and foremost, I raised two boys, one that was diagnosed with ADHD and ADD, and another that was ADD. I have also been an elementary teacher for 15 years and have had several students in my classroom that needed modifications. I have worked with physicians and parents in this area.
Being a teacher I have had many students with trouble in this area. Some were physical issues, some were behavior. I have many materials.
