About Cheryl

I am a retired special education teacher. I especially enjoy helping students with reading difficulties find ways to work around their difficulties. I have developed several methods over the years such as recording reading materials and preparing computer assisted reading materials. I have found that when students can find alternative ways to obtain and respond to subject content they can more fully express what they actually know.

I especially enjoy working with students and parents who truly want to improve their skills. I have found that the motivation of the student to succeed is one of the most important factors in determining success. I feel that all students can learn and be successful if they truly want that and if they are given the proper accommodations to enable them to demonstrate what they learn.

I have a master's degree in education with special emphasis on learning disabilities. During my last few years as a teacher I tried several methods of adapting reading materials for students so that they could listen to the materials that they were asked to read. I found that by looking at the text while listening to it being read improved comprehension because the student could focus on the meaning of the text instead of trying to figure out the written words.

If you think that my methods might be of benefit to you, please contact me and we can discuss your needs and perhaps develop a plan that will make the education process more successful for you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Special Needs

I feel that my 30+ years of experience teaching special education in the public schools qualifies me to tutor. I also have a master's degree in education, specializing in learning disabilities. I enjoy working with students who are struggling and wish to find ways to make the learning process more effective.
