As a high school and college student, I was often fascinated by the things I was learning in my math and science classes, but I often didn't connect with the way some things were taught. Sometimes I felt like teachers moved too quickly, used too much academic jargon, or simply didn't show much interest in the subject matter they were teaching - as if they were boring themselves. I often found myself thinking about how I would teach certain concepts differently, like creating more visual aids and giving a better big picture "why" to illuminate the smaller concept being zoomed in on. Still, I am very grateful for many of the teachers I had that did these sorts of things incredibly well, as I would find their energy and curiosity rubbing off on me as I was motivated to work harder and find the beauty in what might otherwise be a very dull homework assignment or lecture.

As a tutor, I aim to bring this same sort of energy and curiosity to the table. I invite students into being curious about the wonders of the natural order of our existence alongside me. It's a mindset that might face resistance, and might require a great deal of pushing oneself beyond what feels easy or comfortable, but I believe every student has the potential to develop this sort of curious, growth mindset. After graduating from the University of Missouri with a degree that required countless hours of working towards understanding subjects like thermodynamics and differential equations, I got a job as a Math Fellow with an Americorps program, where I received in-depth training from experienced teachers on a weekly basis - meaning my tutoring skills were frequently being observed and critiqued. This helped me remain more humble and consider things from different points of view, which is an essential skill for any great tutor. As I spent more time in the classroom learning how to teach well, I realized I was more passionate about this profession than an engineering career. I fell in love with the purpose that comes with sticking with a student t

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

I got an A in algebra 1 with ease when I took it and I have had to keep my algebra skills sharp as both a tutor and a recently graduated engineering student.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

I passed Honors Algebra 2 at Lafayette High School in Wildwood, and I continued to use those Algebra 2 skills throughout the rest of my academic career. This includes AP Calculus and AP Physics, as well as all the math classes required for an Architectural Engineering degree from the University of Kansas. I received A’s in all of these courses.
