Hello! My name is Katie and I am a Junior at Webster University. I am majoring in secondary education with an emphasis in English and a minor in German. Upon graduation, I will be certified to teach English in grades 9-12. I am currently a Junior and have completed observation hours at a local public high school in an English III classroom, as well as a literacy lab classroom.
While I was in high school, I was a peer literacy tutor. I tutored high school students in reading, language arts, and writing. I was a volunteer at this time. As part of a child development course, I co-facilitated activities in a preschool setting, including crafts, stories, music, and games.
I have more experience with the older crowd, but I am willing to tutor students of all ages. My philosophy of academic English is that it is an instrument of communication, on both ends of the exchange. The stronger someone is in writing, the better they can communicate. The stronger someone is in reading, the better they can receive communication. I am also a big proponent of understanding history and the perspective(s) of the author, as I believe it is vital for understanding the author's intent.
As far as test scores go, I earned a 28 on my ACT, a 3 on the AP English Literature and Composition exam, and a 5 on the AP English Language and Composition exam. I also received a 4 on the AP Psychology exam, however I am not equipped to tutor psychology at this time. I am certainly willing to help with test preparation, however, I do not have training as a test preparation facilitator.
I sing with the Webster University concert choir and primarily with the Webster University Women's Chorus as an alto 2. I have been a member of various choirs for ten years, and I intend to stay with choir at Webster until my student teaching semester.
