I am a pharmaceutical industrial process development chemist who has used organic chemistry to develop new and improved manufacturing processes for most of my career. The design and improvement of procedures used to produce life-saving and life-improving drugs has been uniquely rewarding and has validated my early interest in organic chemistry as a college student graduating with academic honors.

I have a bachelor's degree in chemistry with several graduate level courses and a career in the chemical industry. I have always had to describe my (chemistry) work in detail to audiences with less chemical understanding (typically managers, regulators, and other industry professionals such as engineers and operators). These discussions have been both verbal (e.g. meetings, lectures, work group discussions) and written (e.g. progress reports, regulatory filings, batch records, patents) so I have a great deal of experience in explaining chemical principles and processes clearly for other interested parties and answering their questions. The types of issues discussed (structure, reactivity, scope, impurities and side products) are typically the same as those encountered by the student.

Although organic chemistry is a vast and complex subject, the principles which govern it are relatively simple and very accessible even to the beginning student. The beauty of organic chemistry is two fold--first that it is nearly limitless in its possibilities and second that understanding and appreciation of its depth and breadth is easy to those who know how to approach it. I love sharing this roadmap to understanding with the student and seeing their understanding and appreciation take root and grow.

Many people who do not wish to major in chemistry or make it their life's work still need a basic understanding of organic chemistry for other purposes. Much instruction in this field is needlessly complex and difficult for the non-major to understand. I can cut through the jargon and the unnecessary clutter and make understanding simple, rapid, and easy. I have had good results making organic chemistry understandable at both the student and professional level by being consistently mindful of the governing principles of electron movement--filling shells, filling orbitals, pairing electrons, and balancing charge--in the context of the electronegativity and geometry of the species involved. I believe this approach will continue to benefit the student in need of tutoring. You'll be surprised at how little work is involved in mastering the basics of this subject.

Organic Chemistry

I have a bachelor's degree in chemistry with several graduate level courses and a career in the chemical industry. My teaching experience includes conducting help sessions in organic chemistry at the college level, leading work group discussions and seminars at the professional level. I have had good results making organic chemistry understandable at both the student and professional level by being consistently mindful of the governing principles of electron movement--filling shells, filling orbitals, pairing electrons, and balancing charge--in the context of the electronegativity and geometry of the species involved.
