About Rebecca

I am a fun individual with a lot of energy. I am also a recent graduate from Webster University's TESOL program. I have enjoyed my studies over the last 2 years and I am anxious to get out there and help individuals with their English skills. I have always known that I wanted to help others in some capacity, and I truly feel this is what I am meant to do. My upbringing and my education have lead me to this point. I was born and raised in Hong Kong. My father was the headmaster of the Hong Kong International School and my mother was a kindergarten teacher. My parents instilled in me the importance of education, and growing up overseas taught me about the diversity of the world. I have an appreciation for the world around me and the people in it. I have lived in the US for the last 20 years. Moving to the US, at the age of 17, was a difficult transition. I hope to share my experiences with others, where appropriate, and help with any transitions they might be going through.

I have experience tutoring community college students and adults in ESL, grammar, vocabulary, reading, writing, listening and speaking (pronunciation). I enjoyed my time as a tutor and many peer friendships formed from the opportunities. I love tutoring because I know that I am helping someone in exactly the way they need it, and the one-on-one or small group setting is an ideal environment for teaching others.

I have been studying the principles and practices of teaching English as a Second Language for the last two years. I have learned a great deal and feel ready to take on tutoring ESL in any aspect, including reading, writing, speaking (pronunciation), listening, and grammar.

I want to make learning English FUN for you! If you'd like to find out how, please contact me to see if working together would be a good fit. I look forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I am a native English speaker. In addition, I have succeeded in many different types of English classes throughout higher education. English is a difficult subject and I have been taught several different methods in which to make that process easier.

ESL/ESOL

I am a recent graduate from Webster University in which I received a Master's in TESOL. For the last 2 years I have dedicated my life to learning the principles and practices of teaching English as a second language. I have learned a variety of tools, activities, and authentic exercises that will help non-native speakers acquire English.

Grammar

Grammar has never been one of my most favorite subjects, because the English language has so many strange grammar rules. However, grammar is crucial when reading, writing, speaking, and listening, Without proper grammar the true meaning can be lost. I have studied grammar in detail and feel I am ready to teach it to others.

Reading

I have always enjoyed reading. Reading can be for fun, or it can be educational. No matter the reason, not being able to read in this world today will hinder an individual on many levels. I can help you learn to read in hopes that it will make school and daily life a little less difficult.

Vocabulary

One of my teachers in graduate school expressed the importance of vocabulary to me. Ever since then I have begun to understand her reasoning. There are different tiers of vocabulary, and progressing through each one is necessary for success in one's education or one's career. I have developed a unique approach to teaching vocabulary, and I would be happy to share that with you.

Writing

Writing is the more formal mode of expression. As the times change, and technology advances we will always have to have good writing skills. Writing well does not have to be difficult. When one knows what they want to say, can chose the appropriate words to do so, have a good handle on the grammar rules to use, then one can write well. I can help you get to this point.
