About Jamie

While I tutor a variety of subjects, I particularly enjoy working with students who are preparing for the verbal and writing segments of the ACT, SAT and GRE. I have found that these standardized tests come during a very transitional moment in the lives of teens and young adults, and I am passionate about helping my students to build confidence and gain the necessary skills to meet their score goals. I believe that every student has unique ways of learning, and I take pride in finding the right learning strategies to help each student to maximize their learning potential.

I earned my BA at UC San Diego, where I graduated Cum Laude with a major in Human Development and a focus in the area of psychology. I also graduated Summa Cum Laude with my Master of Arts in Theology from the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology (DSPT) in Berkeley, CA. I am now working toward my Masters of Social Work at Brown School of Social Work at WUSTL.

During my undergraduate years, I had the privilege of tutoring at-risk students in K-5 who were below the 50th percentile in reading through the America Reads program. Later, during my graduate level studies, I tutored reading, writing, and verbal skills at Huntington Learning Center. There, I not only worked with younger students out on the floor, but also tutored SAT and ACT prep for the Reading and Writing portions of both exams. During this time, I was able to help many students increase their test scores and reach their goals. Finally, in my years as Director of Admissions at a graduate school, I not only read numerous personal statements for graduate admission applications but also helped many of those same students to polish their statements prior to final submission.

Please contact me to schedule tutoring sessions. I look forward to working with you, and to helping you achieve your academic goals.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I am excited to return to tutoring for the ACT English section, and have helped many students to meet their ACT goals. Tutoring sessions will begin with an initial diagnostic test to identify areas for growth. I will also work with you to increase your familiarity with the ACT test section and question types and to help you learn through assigned practice sets. Test prep sessions are generally two hours in length. Contact me to set up your first session.

Bible Studies

I graduated summa cum laude with my MA in Theology with a concentration in Biblical Studies from the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology, a member school of the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, CA. During my MA studies, I took a variety of both Old Testament and New Testament classes, as well as a variety of Jewish historical and cultural classes that earned me a Certificate in Jewish Studies in addition to my MA. I also completed several Greek and Hebrew courses, all with a grade of A- or above. I feel confident in my ability to teach both historical critical and literary methods for both the Old Testament and the New Testament.

College Counseling

I worked as Director of Admissions at a graduate school for about three years. During this time, I had the opportunity to counsel many young people who were considering their next best steps. During my time at Huntington Learning Center, I was also able to encourage young people to think about different college possibilities and positive fits.

GRE

I most recently took the GRE in November 2015. I scored a 170 on the Verbal section, and a 5.0 on the Analytical Writing section. In general, I will be best matched with those who want to increase their verbal and writing scores. Tutoring sessions will begin with an initial diagnostic test to identify areas for growth. I will also work with you to increase your familiarity with the GRE Verbal and Analytical Writing sections/ question types and to help you learn through assigned practice sets. Test prep sessions are generally two hours in length. Contact me to set up your first session.

Phonics

I spent three years during my undergraduate studies at UCSD tutoring as an "America Reads" tutor. As a part of that program, we helped children ages 5-10 to learn letters and sounds in an effort to bring their reading skills up to grade level. I also tutored reading/phonics with young children (4-7) on the reading floor at Huntington Learning Center for 2.5 years.

Religion

From 2010 to 2014, I studied at the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology, which is a member school of the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, CA. While there, I not only earned an MA in (Catholic) Theology, but also earned a Certificate in Jewish Studies. I had the opportunity to interact in class with people from many different Christian denominations as well as many different world religions. My best areas of knowledge are Christianity, Catholicism, and Judaism. However, I also took several anthropological classes during my undergraduate years, and feel able to speak to Native American spirituality as well.

SAT Reading

I am excited to return to tutoring SAT test prep, and have helped many students to reach their SAT goals. I most recently took the SAT as a part of my application to be an SAT/ACT test prep tutor through Huntington Learning Center in July 2011. I scored an 800 on the Reading section. Tutoring sessions will begin with an initial diagnostic test to identify areas for growth. I will also work with you to increase your familiarity with the SAT test section and question types and to help you learn through assigned practice sets. Test prep sessions are generally two hours in length. Contact me to set up your first session.

SAT Writing

I am excited to return to tutoring SAT test prep, and have helped many students to reach their SAT Writing goals. I most recently took the SAT as a part of my application to be an SAT/ACT test prep tutor through Huntington Learning Center in July 2011. I scored an 760 on the Writing section and a 6.0 on the Analytical Writing section. Tutoring sessions will begin with an initial diagnostic test to identify areas for growth. I will also work with you to increase your familiarity with the SAT test section and question types and to help you learn through assigned practice sets. Test prep sessions are generally two hours in length. Contact me to set up your first session.

Study Skills

As a young woman who completed her BA Cum Laude and her MA Summa Cum Laude, I am no stranger to good study skills and hard work. I also had the opportunity to teach positive study skills at Huntington Learning Center to the students I worked with, especially the junior high and high school students. I taught students how to make flash cards, how to read for significant content, and how to study for tests.
