About Beth

I am currently a teacher in a private school in St. Louis, but previously taught in a large school district in St. Louis County for seven years. My eight years of experience have been in grades 1-3. I have tutored students before and after school in all subject areas, but mostly reading and math. When tutoring math, I play a lot of games with the students to increase number fluency and automaticity while also having fun!

This helps the students feel more confident and comfortable when solving something that is hard for them. I also have prepared students for upcoming tests and also work on homework that the students might have.

I also run a weekly tutoring program in St. Louis with a non-profit, Freedom Arts & Education Center, coordinating 10+ volunteers so that each student has individual mentoring, which leads to success. For each student, I set reading and math tutoring goals so that they can show growth at the end of each term. I oversee each child's success and have seen progress, increased confidence, and independent ownership of their learning.

I have my Master's degree from Lindenwood University in Elementary Mathematics, K-5 Specialist.

For the length of my career, I have taught Balanced Literacy and guided, ability grouped, reading.

I use the Common Core resources daily to plan and implement instruction in my classroom. I have extensively studied the Common Core in my graduate work.

My master's degree in Elementary Mathematics has challenged me to provide opportunities for students to learn mathematics in fun and engaging ways.

Using balanced literacy, I am familiar with teaching phonics and decoding strategies.

I would love to work with you over the summer and into next school year to help you with reading, math, and writing skills that will help you become a more confident and capable learner!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Common Core

I have taught the Common Core curriculum since it has been established. My graduate work studied extensively into the K-6 Common Core Standards and how they are used for the Smarter Balanced and PARCC state tests. I meet weekly with my teammates to write SMART goals for students based on CCSS, and align our resources with the grade level standards.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have taught second grade, third grade, and will soon teach first grade. My experience with my graduate work ranges from Kindergarten to sixth grade. I work with other teachers to vertically align our curriculum, and because of my familiarity with the Common Core, I'm aware of the standards and growth for each grade level. In addition, I manage a tutoring program with students ages K-6th grade. In the program, I plan and prepare math games and lessons, and reading activities for each student to complete with their tutor.
