About Stephanie

As a Spanish major, I tutored for my university's Spanish Resource Center, helping college students practice grammar or work on their compositions. I also volunteered as an ESL instructor with adult learners. I appreciate the motivation of college-age and adult learners and hope to continue working with them. I know that standardized testing for the verbal and written sections of the SAT and GRE can be frustrating and difficult, but with my experience as an English major and my own performance on these tests, I know that I have good strategies to offer students looking to earn a good score.

While much of my tutoring experience has been with adults, I also enjoy working with young children and have spent time over the years volunteering with and caring for preschool and elementary age children. I would be excited to help children foster a love of reading and firm up their skills where they are struggling.

My favorite aspect of tutoring is seeing students grow in their own confidence. The process isn't about me giving you knowledge; it's about you figuring out what works well for your learning and success. I love the opportunity to come alongside people in subject areas that I think are important and enjoyable. English is not just for people who love literature. Everyone can benefit from excellent reading comprehension as well as clear written and verbal communication skills. In addition, learning to communicate in a foreign language, like Spanish, is so rewarding and useful in our increasingly globalized world.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
